He said, “Servant of Allah, how do you recite the Qur’an?”
He replied, “I recite it intermittently, portion by portion.”
He then asked, “And how do you recite, Muʿādh?”
Muʿādh answered, “I sleep at the beginning of the night; when I have taken my allotted rest, I rise and recite whatever Allah has decreed for me. I count my sleep as meritorious just as I count my standing in prayer.”
Al-Bukhārī alone recorded this wording; Muslim did not narrate it through this chain.
Al-Bukhārī also said: “Ishāq related to us; Khālid related to us; from al-Shaybānī; from Saʿīd ibn Abī Burdah; from his father; from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Yemen and he asked him there about beverages that were being produced. He said, ‘What are they?’ He replied, ‘Al-bitʿ and al-mizr.’ I said to Abū Burdah, ‘What is al-bitʿ?’ He said, ‘A fermented drink made from honey; and al-mizr is a fermented drink made from barley.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Every intoxicant is unlawful.’ ”
Jarīr and ʿAbd al-Wāḥid also transmitted it from al-Shaybānī, from Abū Burdah, and Muslim narrated it from Saʿīd ibn Abī Burdah.
Al-Bukhārī further said: “Hibbān narrated to us; ʿAbdullāh informed us; from Zakariyyā ibn Isḥāq; from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Ṣayfī; from Abū Maʿbad, the client of Ibn ʿAbbās; from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched Muʿādh ibn Jabal to Yemen he told him:
‘You are going to a people of the Scripture. When you arrive, invite them to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If they respond to you in that, inform them that Allah has made obligatory for them five prayers each day and night. If they comply, then inform them that Allah has prescribed a charity to be taken from their wealthy and returned to their poor. If they accept this, beware of taking the choicest of their property, and fear the supplication of the oppressed, for between it and Allah there is no veil.’ ”
The remaining compilers of the Six Books likewise recorded this ḥadīth through several chains.
