Chapter: The Prophet’s Dispatch of Khalid ibn al-Walid

Ibn Ishaq said:

Later, in the month of Rabiʿ al-Akhir—or Jumada al-Ula—of the tenth year, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to the Banu al-Harith ibn Kaʿb in Najran. He instructed him to invite them to Islam for three days before engaging them in combat; if they responded, he was to accept it from them, and if they refused, he was to fight them.

Khalid set out and, on reaching their territory, dispatched mounted couriers in every direction calling the people to Islam, proclaiming, “O people, embrace Islam and you will be safe.” The people accepted Islam and entered into what they were summoned to. Khalid then remained among them, teaching them Islam, the Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ, just as the Messenger of Allah had ordered should they submit without fighting.

Khalid ibn al-Walid then wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
To Muhammad, the Prophet and Messenger of Allah, from Khalid ibn al-Walid.
Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. I praise Allah to you—there is no deity but He.

As to what follows: O Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless you—you sent me to the Banu al-Harith ibn Kaʿb and instructed me, upon arrival, not to fight them for three days and to invite them to Islam. If they embraced Islam I was to accept it from them and teach them the hallmarks of Islam, the Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of His Prophet; if they did not, I was to fight them.

I reached them and invited them to Islam for three days, just as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me. I sent riders among them who announced, “O Banu al-Harith, embrace Islam and you will be safe.” They have accepted Islam and offered no resistance. I am now staying among them, commanding them to do what Allah has commanded and forbidding them what Allah has forbidden, teaching them the hallmarks of Islam and the Sunnah of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sends me further instructions.

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then wrote back to him
