ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said:
“When the angels were commanded to prostrate, the first of them to do so was Isrāfīl. Allah therefore honored him by inscribing the Qur’an upon his forehead.” This was reported by Ibn ʿAsākir (1).
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā (2) related:
ʽUqbah ibn Mukram narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ narrated to us, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah created Adam from dust, then made him clay, and left him until it became dark, viscous mud. He then created and fashioned him, and left him until he became dried clay that rang like pottery.
Iblīs would pass by him and say, ‘You have been created for a momentous purpose.’
Then Allah breathed into him of His Spirit. The first part of him to come alive was his eyesight and his nostrils; he sneezed, and Allah (3) met him with the mercy of His Lord, saying, ‘May your Lord have mercy on you.’
Thereafter Allah said, ‘O Adam, go to those people over there and listen to what they say.’ So he went and greeted them with salām. They replied, ‘And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.’ Allah said, ‘O Adam, this is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants.’
Adam asked, ‘My Lord, who are my descendants?’
He said, ‘Choose one of My two Hands, O Adam!’
Adam replied, ‘I choose the Right Hand of my Lord’—and both Hands of my Lord are right. Allah then spread out His palm, and there appeared in the palm of the All-Merciful all who were to come from Adam’s progeny. Among them were men whose faces shone with light, and Adam was astonished at the radiance of one of them.
He said, ‘My Lord, who is this?’
He replied, ‘That is your son David.’
Adam said, ‘My Lord, how many years of life have You assigned him?’
He said, ‘Sixty years.’
Adam said, ‘My Lord, complete it from my own lifespan so that he may live one hundred years.’ Allah did so and required Adam to bear witness to it.
When Adam’s appointed term finally came to an end, Allah sent the Angel of Death to him. Adam said, ‘Do I not still have forty years remaining of my life?’
The angel replied, ‘Did you not give them to your son David?’ Adam denied it, so his offspring denied it; he forgot, and his offspring forgot.” (5)
This ḥadīth was also transmitted by al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār, al-Tirmidhī (6), and al-Nasā’ī in “al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah,” through the narration of Ṣafwān ibn ʿĪsā, from al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Dhubāb, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Tirmidhī said, “A ḥasan gharib report through this chain.”
Al-Nasā’ī (7) commented, “This ḥadīth is munkar.” It has also been narrated by Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Salām, as a statement attributed to the latter (8).
