al-ʿAshirah (1), ʿAns (2), the delegation of the Dāriyyūn (3), the Rahāwiyyūn (4), Banū Ghāmid (5), al-Nakhʿ (6), Bajīlah (7), Khathʿam (8), and Ḥaḍramawt (9). Among them he mentioned Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr (10), and he also named the four kings—Jamdan (11), Mikhwas, Mishraḥ, and Abdaʿah (12). In the Musnad of Aḥmad it is reported that these four, together with their sister al-ʿAmarradah, were cursed (13). Al-Wāqidī spoke at considerable length on the matter.
He further cited (14) the delegations of Azd ʿUmān, Ghāfiq, Bāriq, Daws, Thumālah, al-Ḥuddān, Aslam, Judhām, Mahrah, Ḥimyar, Najrān, and Jayshān. A detailed discussion of these tribes would be exceedingly long. We have already presented some of what pertains to them, and what we have cited is sufficient. Allah, exalted is He, knows best.
Al-Wāqidī (15) then said:
The Envoy of the Beasts of Prey
Shuʿayb ibn ʿUbādah related to me, from al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥanṭab (16): While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was seated in Madinah with his Companions, a wolf approached, stopped before him, and howled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“This is the envoy of the predators who has come to you. If you wish, you may allocate something for him so that he will not turn to anyone else; and if you prefer, leave him be and remain cautious of him (17). Whatever he takes will be his allotted provision.”
