Abū al-Ḥawārī said:
“I heard Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī say that ʿAlqamah ibn Yazīd ibn Suwayd al-Azdī told him, saying: My father related to me from my grandfather Suwayd ibn al-Ḥārith:
‘I was one of seven men from our tribe who came as a delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we entered and spoke to him, the Prophet was pleased with our bearing and our dress. He asked,
“Who are you?”
We replied, “Believers.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said,
“Every statement has an underlying reality. What then is the reality of your statement—your faith?”
We answered, “Fifteen qualities: five your envoys instructed us to believe in, five they instructed us to act upon, and five we had cultivated during the Age of Ignorance and still uphold—unless you dislike any of them.”
He said,
“What are the five my envoys commanded you to believe in?”
We replied, “They told us to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the resurrection after death.”
He asked,
“And what are the five they commanded you to practice?”
We said, “To declare that there is no god but Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the alms-tax, to fast in the month of Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the House for whoever is able to find a way.”
He asked,
“And what are the five traits you adopted in the pre-Islamic period?”
We replied, “Gratitude in times of ease, patience in times of hardship, contentment with the bitter decree, truthfulness on the battlefield, and refraining from gloating over the misfortunes of enemies.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“Wise and learned—your understanding has almost made you prophets.”
Then he added,
“And I shall add five more so that your qualities become twenty, if you remain as you say: do not hoard what you will not eat; do not build what you will not inhabit; do not vie for what you will abandon tomorrow; fear Allah to Whom you shall return and before Whom you shall be presented; and aspire to that which you are heading toward and wherein you will abide forever.”
The delegation left the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, memorised his counsel, and acted upon it.
He then mentioned the Delegation of Kindah: they were some thirteen riders under the leadership of al-Ashʿath ibn Qays. The Prophet granted the delegation ten awqiyahs of silver and gave al-Ashʿath twelve awqiyahs, as has been noted earlier.
