whereupon the man exclaimed, “Praise be to Allah, who has preserved me until I could affirm your truth.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “These hearts are in the Hand of Allah—glorified and exalted is He.” He then passed his hand over the face of Khuzaymah ibn Suwāʾ, and a white blaze appeared upon it. After granting them the customary gifts he gave to delegations, they returned to their homeland.
Delegation of Banū Kilāb
Al-Wāqidī reports that they arrived in the ninth year. They numbered thirteen men, among them the poet Labīd ibn Rabīʿah and Jabbār ibn Sulmā. Jabbār enjoyed a bond of friendship with Kaʿb ibn Mālik, so Kaʿb welcomed, honoured, and presented him with a gift. The delegation then accompanied him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, greeted him with the greeting of Islam, and informed him that al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Sufyān al-Kilābī had conducted their affairs in accordance with the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, as Allah had commanded. He called them to Allah, they responded, and he collected their alms from their wealthy and distributed them to their poor.
Delegation of Banū Ruʾās ibn Kilāb
Al-Wāqidī further relates that a man named ʿAmr ibn Mālik ibn Qays ibn Bujayd ibn Ruʾās ibn Kilāb ibn Rabīʿah ibn ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, embraced Islam, and then returned to his people to summon them to Allah. They answered, “We will not comply until we inflict upon Banū ʿUqayl what they inflicted upon us,” referring to a previous confrontation in which ʿAmr ibn Mālik himself had slain a man from Banū ʿUqayl.
He said, “I shackled my own hand and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; news of what I had done reached him.” The Prophet declared, “If he comes to me, I shall strike what is above the shackle on his hand.” When ʿAmr arrived he offered greetings of peace, but the Prophet did not return them and turned away. Approaching from the right, then the left, he received the same response, until he finally faced the Prophet and pleaded, “O Messenger of Allah, the Lord—glorified and exalted—is appeased and then becomes pleased; so be pleased with me, and may Allah be pleased with you.” The Prophet replied, “I am pleased with you.”
