Delegation of Banū ʿAbs
Al-Wāqidī (1) reports that they were nine men, whose names he records. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, “I am your tenth,” then ordered Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh to tie a banner for them and made their watchword, “O Ten!” He further relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them about Khālid ibn Sinān al-ʿAbsī, whose biography we presented earlier among the people of the pre-Islamic era; they replied that he left no progeny. Al-Wāqidī also states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them to keep an eye on a Quraysh caravan coming from Syria. This indicates that their delegation arrived before the Conquest, and Allah knows best.
Delegation of Banū Fazārah
Al-Wāqidī (2) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Jumaḥī narrated to us from Abū Wajzah al-Saʿdī (3): When the Messenger of Allah returned from Tabūk in the ninth year, a delegation of Banū Fazārah—slightly more than ten men—came to him. Among them were Khārijah ibn Ḥiṣn and al-Ḥārith ibn Qays ibn Ḥiṣn, the youngest of them, riding on scrawny mounts. They arrived openly affirming their Islam, and the Messenger of Allah asked them about their homeland.
One of them said, “O Messenger of Allah, our land has dried up, our livestock have perished, our territory is barren (4), and our dependents are hungry (5). Pray to Allah for us.”
The Messenger of Allah then ascended the pulpit and supplicated:
“O Allah, water Your land and Your beasts; spread Your mercy; revive Your dead earth. O Allah, grant us rain that is abundant, nourishing, fertile, drenching (6), wide-reaching, immediate and not delayed, beneficial and not harmful. O Allah, give us a downpour of mercy, not a downpour of punishment, nor destruction, nor flooding, nor obliteration. O Allah, send us rain and grant us victory over the enemies.”
He said: It rained, and for an entire week (7) they could not see the sky. Then the Messenger of Allah ascended the pulpit once more and prayed:
“O Allah, around us and not upon us; O Allah, upon the hillocks and small mounds (8), the valley beds, and the places where trees grow.”
The sky then cleared away from Madinah as a garment is drawn aside (9).
