Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

From Abū Wāʾil, on the authority of Jarīr, who said:
“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, stipulate the terms for me, for you know best what conditions should be set.’ He replied:
‘I pledge allegiance with you on the following: that you worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him; that you establish the prayer; that you pay the zakāh; that you give sincere counsel to every Muslim; and that you repudiate idolatry.’

Al-Nasāʾī also transmitted this ḥadīth through Shuʿbah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Jarīr. In another chain it comes through al-Aʿmash, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from Abū Nukhaylah, from Jarīr—and Allah knows best. He likewise reported it through Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah, from Jarīr, from Mughīrah, from Abū Wāʾil and al-Shaʿbī, from Jarīr. It was also narrated from Jarīr by ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmīrah—Imām Aḥmad recorded that version exclusively—as well as by his son ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Jarīr, which Aḥmad likewise narrated alone. Abū Jamīlah—whose correct name is Abū Nukhaylah—related it, and both Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī transmitted his version. Aḥmad further narrated it through Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from an unnamed man, from Jarīr, then cited the ḥadīth; most probably that man is Abū Nukhaylah al-Bajalī, and Allah knows best.

We have already mentioned that when Jarīr embraced Islam, the Prophet ﷺ dispatched him to Dhū’l-Khalāṣah, a shrine venerated by the tribes of Khathʿam and Bajīlah. They called it “the southern Kaʿbah,” setting it up as a rival to the Kaʿbah in Mecca, which they referred to as “the northern Kaʿbah.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him,
‘Will you not relieve me of Dhū’l-Khalāṣah?’

Jarīr thereupon complained to the Prophet ﷺ that he could not keep his seat on horseback. The Prophet ﷺ placed his blessed hand on Jarīr’s chest, leaving its imprint, and supplicated:

‘O Allah, make him steadfast and a guide who himself is guided.’

After that Jarīr never fell from a horse. He set out to Dhū’l-Khalāṣah with one hundred and fifty horsemen from his clan, the people of Aḥmas, demolished the shrine and burned it until it resembled a mangy camel. He then sent a messenger named Abū Arṭāh to convey the good news to the Prophet ﷺ. In response, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked blessings upon the cavalry and men of Aḥmas five times.

(3) The term naḥīla appears in two spellings: with the undotted ḥāʾ (ḥāʾ muhmala) and with the dotted ḥāʾ (ḥāʾ muʿajjama). Both readings occur in ʾAwt, in Sunan an-Nasa’i, in al-Kunā (Muslim, vol. 12), in al-Ikmāl (vol. 7, p. 335) and in Tabsīr al-Muntaẓir (vol. 4, p. 1412). Al-Mizzī, in his entry in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (vol. 34, p. 342), reports that ʿAbd al-Ghanī ibn Saʿīd transmitted the undotted form, while others transmitted the dotted; see also al-Daraqutnī’s Balāḍhī al-Taʿlīq ʿalā al-Muʿtalif (vol. 4, p. 2272).
