Ismāʿīl related it from Qays, who narrated from him, adding the words, “A man will now come through this door whose face bears a touch of an angel,” and he reported the incident in wording similar to what has already been mentioned.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us, saying, “Abū ʿAmr ʿUthmān ibn Aḥmad al-Sammāk narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Sallām al-Sawwāq narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muqātil al-Khurasānī narrated to us; Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿUmar al-Aḥmasī narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me and asked, “Jarīr, for what purpose have you come?” I replied, “To accept Islam at your hand, O Messenger of Allah.” He thereupon threw a cloak over me, then turned to his Companions and said,
“If a nobleman of his people comes to you, then honor him.”
He continued, “Jarīr, I invite you to testify that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, to believe in Allah, the Last Day, and the divine decree—its good and its evil— to perform the prescribed prayers, and to pay the obligatory zakāh.” I accepted his call, and thereafter he never saw me without smiling in my face.’
This transmission is unique through this chain.
Imām Aḥmad said: Yahyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: ‘I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to establish the prayer, give the zakāh, and offer sincere counsel to every Muslim.’
Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim include this report through the chain of Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, and they also record it through Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah from Jarīr with the same meaning.
Imām Aḥmad also said: Abū Saʿīd narrated to us; Zāʾidah narrated to us; ʿĀṣi m narrated to us from Shaqīq—that is, Abū
