and the night prayer at its earliest time during the night. [He also instructed him to hasten to the Friday prayer when its call is made, and to bathe before setting out for it.]
He further ordered him to take from the spoils of war the one-fifth due to Allah, and to collect from the believers the charity that has been prescribed: from land irrigated by springs one-tenth; from land watered by rainfall a full tithe; and from land watered by mechanical lifts half a tithe. For every ten camels two sheep are due; for twenty camels, four sheep. From forty cattle one cow is due, and from every thirty cattle a yearling bullock or heifer. For every forty pasturing sheep that graze on their own, one sheep is due. This is Allah’s obligatory due upon the believers—whoever gives more, it is better for him.
Whoever of the Jews or Christians embraces Islam sincerely of his own accord and submits to the religion of Islam becomes one of the believers; for him is what is theirs, and upon him is what is upon them. Whoever chooses to remain upon his Judaism or Christianity is not to be compelled to leave it. Upon every adult—male or female, free or slave—is due one full dinar or its equivalent in garments. Whoever pays that enjoys the covenant of Allah and His Messenger; whoever withholds it is an enemy of Allah, His Messenger, and all the believers. May Allah’s blessings be upon Muḥammad, and peace, mercy, and blessings be upon him.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Bakr ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥazm, from his father, from his grandfather, this ḥadith with a continuous chain, containing many additions and some omissions to what we have mentioned concerning Zakāh, blood-money, and other matters.
I say: From this same chain al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī related it at length in his Sunan, and Abū Dāwūd in the Book of Mursal Reports. I have cited it with its chains and wording in the Sunan—and to Allah belong praise and favor. After the chapters on delegations we shall mention the Prophet’s ﷺ dispatch of envoys to Yemen to teach the people and collect their alms and one-fifth: Muʿādh ibn Jabal, Abū Mūsā, Khālid ibn al-Walīd, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Allah be pleased with them all.
