He said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Adam and Moses disputed. Moses said to Adam, ‘O Adam, you are the one who has brought your offspring into the Fire.’
Adam replied, ‘O Moses! Allah chose you for His messages and His speech, and He sent down the Torah to you. Do you find it written that I was destined to be sent down (from Paradise)?’
He said, ‘Yes.’
Adam said, ‘Then Adam has prevailed over you.’ ” (1)
This chain fulfils the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, yet they did not relate it through this route. The phrase, “You have brought your offspring into the Fire,” is, however, problematic.
These are the various lines of transmission for this ḥadīth from Abū Hurayrah. It is reported from him by Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Dhakwān Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān, Ṭāwūs ibn Kaysān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Hurmuz al-Aʿraj, ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār, Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, Hammām ibn Munabbih, Yazīd ibn Hurmuz, and Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
The ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī also recorded it in his Musnad (2) through a narration of the Commander of the Believers, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him. He said: al-Ḥārith ibn Miskīn al-Miṣrī related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us; Hishām ibn Saʿd informed me, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“Moses عليه السلام said, ‘My Lord, show us Adam who expelled us and himself from the Garden.’ So He showed him Adam عليه السلام.
Moses said, ‘Are you Adam?’
He replied, ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘Are you the one into whom Allah breathed of His spirit, before whom He made His angels prostrate, and to whom He taught all the names?’
He said, ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘What moved you to have us and yourself expelled from the Garden?’
Adam asked him, ‘Who are you?’
He answered, ‘I am Moses.’
Adam said, ‘Are you Moses, the Prophet of the Children of Israel, the one to whom Allah spoke from behind a veil with no messenger from among His creation between you and Him?’
He said, ‘Yes.’
Adam said, ‘Do you reproach me for a matter that Allah had decreed for me beforehand?’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses—thus Adam prevailed over Moses.’ ”
Abū Dāwūd likewise transmitted it (3) from Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Miṣrī, from Ibn Wahb, with the same chain (4).
Abū Yaʿlā said: Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā told us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Mismaʿī told us; ʿImrān narrated to us, from al-Rudaynī ibn Abī Mijlaz, from Yaḥyā ibn Yaʿmar, from Ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar—
Abū Muḥammad said: I am fairly certain that he raised it (to the Prophet)—
He said:
“Adam and Moses met. Moses said to Adam, ‘You are the father of humankind; Allah settled you in His Garden and made His angels prostrate before you.’
Adam replied, ‘O Moses! Do you not find it written against me?’
He said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses—thus Adam prevailed over Moses.’ ” (5)
This chain too is acceptable, and Allah knows best.
