Al-Bukhārī (1) – may Allah have mercy on him – said:
The Account of the Tribe of Daws and al-Tufayl ibn ʿAmr al-Dawsī
Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us; from Ibn Dhakwān—ʿAbd Allāh Abū al-Zinād (2)—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
Al-Tufayl ibn ʿAmr came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Daws has been ruined; they have disobeyed and refused. So supplicate Allah against them.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied,
“O Allah, guide the tribe of Daws and bring them here.”
Al-Bukhārī alone transmits this report through this chain.
He then said (4): Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us; Abū Usāmah narrated to us; Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Qays, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
When I set out to meet the Prophet ﷺ I recited on the road—[from the ṭawīl metre]:
“O night whose length and hardship … yet, though it came from the abode of unbelief, it delivered me.”
A slave boy of mine had run away on the journey. When I reached the Prophet ﷺ and pledged my allegiance to him, we were sitting together when the boy suddenly appeared. The Prophet ﷺ said to me,
“O Abū Hurayrah, this is your slave.”
I replied, “He is free for the sake of Allah,” and I set him free.
Al-Bukhārī is the sole transmitter of this narration from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim.
The arrival of al-Tufayl ibn ʿAmr mentioned by al-Bukhārī took place before the Hijrah. If it is assumed that he came after the Hijrah, then it was certainly before the Conquest, for the people of Daws arrived accompanied by Abū Hurayrah. Abū Hurayrah’s own coming occurred while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was besieging Khaybar. Later, Abū Hurayrah left and rejoined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Khaybar after its conquest, and the Prophet allocated them a portion of the spoils. We have already discussed all of this in detail in the appropriate places.
Al-Bukhārī (5) – may Allah have mercy on him – also said:
The Arrival of the Ashʿarīs and the People of Yemen
He then related (6) through the narration of Shuʿbah, from Sulaymān ibn Mihrān al-Aʿmash, from Dhakwān Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān, from
