Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

with graceful calves and legs,(1) rounded thighs, a trim waist, a slender abdomen, and smooth, well-proportioned flanks.

He continued: “When I saw her I was struck by her beauty and determined to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to allot her to my share of the spoils. Yet the moment she spoke, her eloquence made me forget her looks. She said:

‘O Muḥammad, if you would release us and not let the Arab clans gloat over our humbling, for I am the daughter of my people’s chief. My father used to safeguard honour, ransom the captive, satisfy the hungry, clothe the naked, honour the guest, give food, spread peace, and he never turned away anyone who came in need. I am the daughter of Ḥātim of Ṭayy.’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:

‘Young woman, these are truly the qualities of the believers. Had your father been a Muslim we would have invoked mercy upon him. Release her, for her father loved noble character, and Allah loves noble character.’

Abū Burdah ibn Niyār(3) then rose and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah,(4) does Allah love noble character?’

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered, ‘By Him in whose hand is my soul, no one will enter Paradise except by virtuous character.’

This ḥadīth is excellent in its text, exceedingly rare in its chain of transmission, and scarcely reported.

We have already given the biography of Ḥātim of Ṭayy in the section on well-known pre-Islamic figures, together with an account of the generosity and benevolence he extended to people. Nonetheless, the benefit of such deeds in the Hereafter is contingent upon faith; and he was among those who never once said, even for a single day, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Reckoning.’

Al-Wāqidī(6) claims that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the ninth year AH to the lands of Ṭayy. He returned with captives—among them the sister of ʿAdiyy ibn Ḥātim—and with two swords that had been kept in the idol’s shrine, one called ‘al-Rasūb’(7) and the other ‘al-Mikhḍam,’(8) which al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Shimr had vowed to that idol.
