Kūfah and travelled on until she performed ṭawāf around the House, fearing none but Allah alone. I myself was among those who opened up the treasures of Chosroes son of Hormuz; and if your lives are prolonged, you will yet witness exactly what Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ foretold.
Al-Bukhārī (1) related this report in full through Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥakam from al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl. He also transmitted it through another chain—from Saʿdān ibn Bishr, from Saʿd Abū Mujāhid al-Ṭāʾī, from Muḥill ibn Khalīfah, from ʿAdiyy (2). Imām Aḥmad (3) and al-Nasāʾī (4) likewise recorded it from Shuʿbah on the authority of Saʿd Abū Mujāhid al-Ṭāʾī.
Among those who transmitted this story from ʿAdiyy is ʿĀmir ibn Sharāḥbīl al-Shaʿbī, whose version is similar; he adds, “fearing none but Allah—and the wolf in respect of her sheep.”
It is also firmly established in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī through Shuʿbah and in Muslim (5) through Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah—both from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maʿqil (6) ibn Muqarrin al-Muzanī, from ʿAdiyy ibn Ḥātim—who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Shield yourselves from the Fire, even if only with half a date.” Muslim’s wording is: “Whoever among you can screen himself from the Fire, even with half a date, let him do so.” This is an independent chain corroborating what has preceded.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (7) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; Abū Saʿīd ʿUbayd ibn Kathīr ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Kūfī related to us; Ḍirār ibn Ṣurad (8) related to us; ʿĀṣim ibn Ḥumayd related to us, from Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī (9), from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jundub, from Kumayl ibn Ziyād al-Nakhaʿī, who said:
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib remarked, “Glory be to Allah! How indifferent so many people are to goodness. It is astonishing that a man to whom his Muslim brother comes in need should deem himself unworthy of beneficence. Even if he neither hoped for reward nor feared punishment, he ought to hasten to noble conduct, for good character points to the pathways (10) of success.”
Thereupon a man rose and said, “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Commander of the Believers—did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He replied, “Yes, and I heard something even better. When the captives of the tribe of Ṭayy were brought, there stood a maiden—fair-skinned, brown-haired, tall and graceful, with a straight, high nose; perfectly proportioned in stature, thick-ankled, and shapely-calved…"
