Aḥmad said:
“ʿAffān related to us; Ḥammād related to us; from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār; from Abū Hurayrah; from the Prophet ﷺ, and Ḥumayd from al-Ḥasan from a man—Ḥammād said, ‘I think he is Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī’—from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, ‘Adam met Moses …,’ then he reported its purport (1). Aḥmad alone transmits it through this route.
Aḥmad also said:
“Ḥusayn related to us; Jarīr—meaning Ibn Ḥāzim—related to us; from Muḥammad—meaning Ibn Sīrīn— from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Adam met Moses.
Moses said, “Are you Adam, the one whom Allah created with His own hand, lodged in His Garden, and before whom He caused His angels to prostrate, yet you went on to do what you did?”
Adam replied, “O Moses! (2) You are the one to whom Allah spoke directly and upon whom He sent down the Torah.”
He said, “Yes.”
Adam asked, “Do you find it written against me before I was created?”
He answered, “Yes.”
Thus Adam prevailed over Moses—Adam prevailed over Moses.’ (3)
The same wording was transmitted by Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Ayyūb and Hishām, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, as a marfūʿ report, and likewise by ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim, from Khālid and Hishām, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn. On all of these lines the report meets the criteria of the two Shaykhs.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said:
“Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us; Ibn Wahb informed us; Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ told me, from al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Dhubāb, from Yazīd ibn Hurmuz, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Adam and Moses argued in the presence of their Lord, and Adam won the case of Moses.
Moses said, “You are the one whom Allah created with His own hand, breathed into you of His spirit, made His angels prostrate before you, and settled you in His Garden; then by your sin you caused people to descend to the earth.”
Adam replied, “And you are Moses, whom Allah chose for His message and His speech, gave the tablets that set forth everything clearly, and drew near in intimate converse. For how long before did you find that Allah had written the Torah?”
Moses said, “Forty years.”
Adam asked, “And did you find in it: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord and so he went astray’ (Ṭāhā 20:121)?”
He said, “Yes.”
Adam said, “Do you then blame me for an act that Allah had decreed I would do forty years before He created me?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses.”’ (4)
Al-Ḥārith added: ‘ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Hurmuz also related this to me from Abū Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’
Muslim likewise narrated it (5) from Isḥāq ibn Mūsā al-Anṣārī, from Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ, from al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Dhubāb, from Yazīd ibn Hurmuz and al-Aʿraj, both from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, with similar wording.
Aḥmad further said:
“ʿAbd al-Razzāq related to us; Maʿmar informed us; from al-Zuhrī; from Abū Salamah; from Abū Hurayrah —”
