We have obtained a complete chain for the report cited in brief by Ibn Hishām. We transmit it through the isnād recorded by the ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim Sulaymān ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭabarānī in his al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, where he says:
“Masʿada ibn Saʿd al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Munḏir al-Ḥizāmī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿImrān narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and ʿAbd Allāh, the two sons of Zayd ibn Aslam, narrated to me, from their father, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
Arbad ibn Qays ibn Jazʾ ibn Khālid ibn Jaʿfar ibn Kilāb and ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl ibn Mālik came to Madinah to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They found him seated and sat down before him.
ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl said, ‘Muḥammad, what will you give me if I accept Islam?’
The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘You will have what the Muslims have and you will be bound by what binds them.’
ʿĀmir asked, ‘If I enter Islam, will you grant me authority after you?’
He answered, ‘That is neither for you nor for your people, but you may have the reins of the cavalry.’
ʿĀmir retorted, ‘I already hold the reins of the cavalry of Najd. Give me the Bedouins and keep the townsfolk for yourself.’
The Messenger of Allah said, ‘No.’
When ʿĀmir rose to leave he said, ‘By Allah, I will flood you with horsemen and foot soldiers!’
The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘Allah will protect me from you.’
After they left, ʿĀmir said to Arbad, ‘I will keep Muḥammad busy in conversation; strike him with your sword. Once you kill him, the people will do no more than accept blood-money and shun warfare. We will pay them the blood-money.’
Arbad answered, ‘I will do it.’
They returned to the Prophet. ʿĀmir said, ‘Muḥammad, stand and speak with me.’ The Messenger of Allah rose and walked with him to the side of a wall, where they spoke privately. Arbad reached for his sword, but when he placed his hand on the hilt it became rigid and he could not draw it. Because Arbad delayed, the blow never came. The Messenger of Allah turned, saw what Arbad was attempting, and left them.
Arbad and ʿĀmir departed and, when they reached the volcanic plain of Wāqim, they dismounted. Saʿd ibn Muʿādh and Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr came out to them and said, ‘Move on, enemies of Allah; may Allah curse you both!’
ʿĀmir said, ‘Who is that, O Saʿd?’
He replied, ‘It is Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr, the commander of the battalions.’
The two went on until they reached al-Raqam. Allah sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad and killed him. ʿĀmir proceeded until he came to the lava field, and Allah sent upon him a painful swelling that gripped his throat. Night overtook him in the house of a woman from Banū Salūl. He kept rubbing the swelling in his throat, saying, ‘A swelling like a camel’s swelling—in the house of a Salūlī woman! One would hate to die in her dwelling.’ Then he mounted his horse
