Through al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Saʿīd.
Al-Bazzār likewise transmitted it (1): “ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī al-Fallās told us; Abū Muʿāwiyah told us; al-Aʿmash told us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah—or Abū Saʿīd—from the Prophet ﷺ,” and he cited the same narration.
Aḥmad said (2): “Sufyān related to us, from ʿAmr, who heard Ṭāwūs, who heard Abū Hurayrah, say:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Adam and Moses contended.
Moses said, “O Adam! You are our father; you let us down and expelled us from Paradise.”
Adam replied, “O Moses! You are the one whom Allah singled out with His speech—”’
On another occasion he added: ‘Adam prevailed over Moses, Adam prevailed over Moses.’
Al-Bukhārī recorded it as well (3): from ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, who said, “Sufyān narrated to us; we preserved it from ʿAmr, from Ṭāwūs, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah relate from the Prophet ﷺ:
‘Adam and Moses disputed.
Moses said, “O Adam! You are our father; you disappointed us and expelled us from Paradise.”
Adam replied, “O Moses! Allah chose you with His speech and inscribed for you with His own hand—do you reproach me for a matter Allah had decreed for me forty years before He created me?” Thus Adam prevailed over Moses—thus Adam prevailed over Moses,’ and he repeated it three times.
Sufyān added: ‘Abū al-Zinād narrated to us, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, with the same wording.’
All the major compilers except Ibn Mājah (4) reported this ḥadīth through ten different chains from Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah (5), from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father (6), from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ with a similar text.
Aḥmad also said (7): “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us; from ʿAmmār, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
‘Adam met Moses. Moses asked, “Are you Adam—the one whom Allah created with His own hand, before whom He caused His angels to prostrate, and whom He made dwell in Paradise—yet you did what you did?”
Adam replied, “And you are Moses, whom Allah spoke to directly, chose with His message, and to whom He sent down the Torah. Tell me: which came first, my creation or the Divine Decree?”
He answered, “The Decree came first.” So Adam prevailed over Moses.’” (8)
