Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Muslim likewise recorded it (1) — through ʿAmr al-Nāqid — and al-Nasāʾī (2) — through Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd from Ayyūb ibn al-Najjār — with this same wording. Abū Masʿūd al-Dimashqī (3) noted: “Nothing besides this ḥadīth from him appears in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.” Aḥmad (4) also transmitted it through ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah; and Muslim (5) relayed it through Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq.

Imām Aḥmad (6) said: “Abū Kāmil narrated to us; Ibrāhīm related to us; Ibn Shihāb related to us from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘Adam and Moses engaged in a disputation.
Moses said to him, “Are you Adam, the one whose sin expelled you from Paradise?”
Adam answered, “And you are Moses, whom Allah chose with His messages and His speech—yet you reproach me for a matter that had been decreed for me before I was created?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ concluded, “So Adam prevailed over Moses—so Adam prevailed over Moses,”’—and he repeated it twice.”

I say: Al-Bukhārī and Muslim (7) have also reported this ḥadīth, through al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, in a similar form.

Imām Aḥmad (8) further said: “Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Zāʾidah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
‘Adam and Moses disputed.
Moses said: “O Adam! You are he whom Allah created with His own hand and into whom He breathed of His Spirit; yet you led people astray and expelled them from Paradise.”
Adam replied: “And you are Moses, whom Allah chose to address directly—do you censure me for an act I performed which Allah had written against me before He created the heavens and the earth?”
Thus Adam prevailed over Moses.’”

Both al-Tirmidhī (9) and al-Nasāʾī transmitted it through Yaḥyā ibn Ḥabīb ibn ʿArabī, from Maʿmar ibn Sulaymān, from his father, from al-Aʿmash with this wording. Al-Tirmidhī commented: “It is gharīb (10) through the narration of Sulaymān al-Taymī from al-Aʿmash.” He added: “Some have transmitted it from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Saʿīd.”

I say: Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār recorded it in his Musnad (11) in this manner: through Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā, from Muʿādh ibn Asad—

Al-Haythami in Majma‘ al-Zawa’id (7:191) states: “It was narrated by Abu Ya‘la and al-Bazzar as marfu‘, and their narrators are those of the Sahih collections.”
