Al-ʿAqadī narrated to us; Qurrah narrated to us, from Abū Jamrah, who said:
I asked Ibn ʿAbbās, “I have a clay jar in which I prepare nabīdh; I drink it while it is still sweet, but if I drink a great deal and sit with people for a long time I fear I may disgrace myself.” He replied:
“The delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays once came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, ‘Welcome to a people who will neither be humiliated nor regretful.’ They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, idolaters from Muḍar stand between us and you; we can only reach you in the sacred month. Teach us a few comprehensive matters—if we act upon them we shall enter Paradise, and we can invite those behind us to do the same.’ He said:
‘I command you with four things and I forbid you four.
I command you to believe in Allah—do you know what belief in Allah is? It is to testify that there is no god but Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the zakāh, to fast Ramadan, and to hand over one-fifth of the spoils of war.
And I forbid you four: nabīdh prepared in pumpkins, in hollowed-out palm trunks, in green earthenware jars, and in pitch-coated vessels.’
Muslim likewise relates this ḥadīth from Qurrah ibn Khālid, from Abū Jamrah, and both Ṣaḥīḥs record it through several chains from Abū Jamrah.
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, in his Musnad, said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Jamrah, who said: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say:
When the delegation of ʿAbd al-Qays arrived before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he asked, ‘Who are you?’ They replied, ‘We are from Rabīʿah.’ He said, ‘Welcome to the delegation who will not be disgraced nor regretful.’ They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we are a clan of Rabīʿah. We come to you from a distant land, and between us and you stands this tribe from the idolaters of Muḍar. We can reach you only in a sacred month, so give us a decisive instruction to which we can call those we left behind, and by which we may enter Paradise.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘I charge you with four and I forbid you four.
I charge you to believe in Allah alone—do you know what belief in Allah is? It is to testify that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the zakāh, to fast Ramadan, and to hand over one-fifth of the war booty.
And I forbid you four: pumpkins, green earthenware jugs, hollowed-out palm trunks, and pitch-coated—he may have said “tarred”—vessels. Commit them to memory and convey them to those who are behind you.’
