Al-Bukhārī, may Allah have mercy on him, records under the heading “The Delegation of Banū Tamīm”:
Abū Nuʿaym related to us, Sufyān related to us, from Abū Ṣakhrah, from Ṣafwān ibn Muḥarriz al-Māzinī, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn who said:
A group from Banū Tamīm came to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, “Accept the glad tidings, O Banū Tamīm.”
They replied, “O Messenger of Allah, since you have given us glad tidings, now grant us something.” The displeasure showed on his face.
Then a party from Yemen arrived and he said, “Accept the glad tidings, since Banū Tamīm would not.”
They answered, “We accept them, O Messenger of Allah.”
Al-Bukhārī also said: Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā related to us, Hishām ibn Yūsuf related to us, that Ibn Jurayj informed him, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr told them:
A mounted party from Banū Tamīm came to the Prophet ﷺ. Abū Bakr said, “Appoint al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Maʿbad ibn Zurārah as their leader.”
ʿUmar said, “Rather, appoint al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis.”
Abū Bakr retorted, “You only wish to oppose me.”
ʿUmar replied, “I did not intend to oppose you.”
They argued until their voices grew loud, whereupon the verse was revealed: “O you who believe, do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger” (Qur’an 49:1) — to the end of the passage.
Al-Bukhārī relates the same incident through other chains from Ibn Abī Mulaykah with varied wording, which we have cited in the Tafsīr under the verse, “Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet” (Qur’an 49:2).
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq said: When the Arab delegations began coming to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ʿUtārid ibn Ḥājib ibn Zurārah ibn ʿAdas al-Tamīmī arrived with prominent men from Banū Tamīm — among them al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis al-Tamīmī, al-Zibrqān ibn Badr al-Tamīmī (of Banū Saʿd), ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam, al-Ḥabḥāb ibn Yazīd, Naʿīm ibn Yazīd, Qays ibn al-Ḥārith, and Qays ibn ʿĀṣim of Banū Saʿd — forming a large delegation of their tribe.
Ibn Isḥāq added: With them was ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Badr al-Fazārī. Al-Aqraʿ and ʿUyaynah had witnessed the Conquest of Mecca, Ḥunayn, and al-Ṭāʾif alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and now accompanied Banū Tamīm’s delegation. When they entered the mosque they called out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from outside his apartments, “Come out to us, O Muhammad!” Their loud voices disturbed him, so he came out. They said, “O Muhammad, we have come to contend with you in boasting; grant permission to our poet and our spokesman.”
He replied, “I have given permission to your spokesman; let him speak.”
