Gabriel then came to him with cotton, instructed her to spin it, and taught her how. He likewise ordered Adam to weave and showed him the method.
He said:
“Adam had not consummated marriage with his wife while they were still in Paradise; that only happened after they had been sent down, on account of the sin they committed by eating from the tree.”
He said:
“Each of them used to sleep alone—one would lie in the open plain while the other rested elsewhere—until Gabriel came and commanded him to go to his family.”
He said:
“Gabriel taught him how to approach her. Whenever he went to her, Gabriel would come and ask, ‘How did you find your wife?’ He would reply, ‘Righteous.’”
(1) This ḥadīth is isolated (gharīb), and attributing it to the Prophet is highly objectionable. It may well be the statement of some of the early generations. Saʿīd ibn Maysarah—Abū ʿImrān al-Bakrī al-Baṣrī—about whom al-Bukhārī said (2), “His narrations are munkar,” while Ibn Ḥibbān remarked (3), “He transmits fabrications,” and Ibn ʿAdī added (4), “His case is obscure.”
Concerning the verse, “Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He turned toward him in mercy. Indeed, He is the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful” (Qur’an 2:37), it is said that the “words” are his supplication, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves; and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers” (Qur’an 7:23). This was reported from Mujāhid, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Abū al-ʿĀliyah, al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, al-Ḥasan, Qatādah, Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb, Khālid ibn Maʿdān, ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam (5).
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Ishkāb narrated to us—ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim—from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah—from Qatādah—from al-Ḥasan—from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Adam (peace be upon him) said, ‘My Lord, if I repent and turn back, will You return me to Paradise?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’” (6)
That is the meaning of His saying, “Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He turned toward him in mercy” (Qur’an 2:37). This report is rare from this route and its chain is broken.
Ibn Abī Najīḥ narrated, on the authority of Mujāhid, that the “words” were:
“O Allah, there is no deity but You; glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for You are the best of those who forgive. O Allah, there is no deity but You; glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for You are the most merciful of those who show mercy. O Allah, there is no deity but You; glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so accept my repentance; indeed, You are the Oft-Returning in mercy, the Merciful.” (7)
