Al-Bukhārī relates (1): Khalid ibn Mukhallad told us, Sulaymān narrated to us, ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā reported to me, from al-ʿAbbās ibn Sahl ibn Saʿd, from Abū Ḥumayd, who said:
“We were returning with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the expedition to Tabūk. When we caught sight of Madinah he said,
‘This is Ṭābah, and that is Uḥud—a mountain that loves us and we love it.’”
Muslim likewise transmits it (2) through Sulaymān ibn Bilāl with similar wording.
Al-Bukhārī also says (3): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, who said:
“I remember going out with the other boys to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ when he was returning from the expedition to Tabūk.”
Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī likewise record it (4) through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, and al-Tirmidhī remarks that it is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
Al-Bayhaqī states (5): Abū Naṣr ibn Qatādah informed us, Abū ʿAmr ibn Maṭar informed us, I heard Abū Khalīfah say: I heard Ibn ʿĀʾishah say:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah (6), the women, children, and maidservants began to chant:
The full moon has risen upon us
From the heights of Wadāʿ;
Gratitude is due from us
So long as anyone calls upon Allah.”
Al-Bayhaqī adds (7): “Our scholars mention that this chant was sung when he entered Madinah after coming from Mecca, not when he entered via Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ upon his return from Tabūk. Allah knows best. Nevertheless, we have cited it here as well.”
Al-Bukhārī says (8):
