In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, through the isnād of Shuʿbah, from Qatādah, from Abū Naḍrah, from Qays ibn ʿAbbād, who said:
“I asked ʿAmmār, ‘This position of yours regarding what took place with ʿAlī—was it merely your own opinion, or something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entrusted to you?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted us with nothing that he did not entrust to all people. However, Ḥudhayfah informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Among my Companions are twelve hypocrites; eight of them will never enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle.”’
In another wording Muslim records, by a different chain from Qatādah:
‘In my community there are twelve hypocrites who will not enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. Eight of them will be dealt with by the dubaylah—a lamp of fire that appears between their shoulders until it pierces through their chests.’
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī said: ‘We have also related from Ḥudhayfah that they numbered fourteen—or fifteen. By Allah, I testify that twelve of them are at war with Allah and His Messenger ﷺ in this life and on the Day when the witnesses stand, while he excused three of them because they said, “We did not hear the caller and we did not know what was intended.”’
This ḥadīth is likewise reported by Imām Aḥmad in his Musnad. He said: ‘Yazīd’—meaning Ibn Hārūn—‘narrated to us, saying: al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jumayʿ informed us, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, who said:
‘When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from the expedition of Tabūk, he ordered a herald to announce: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will take the mountain pass; let no one else take it.” While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was proceeding—Ḥudhayfah leading his she-camel and ʿAmmār driving it—a group of riders with their faces veiled approached. They crowded around ʿAmmār as he was driving the mount of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and ʿAmmār began striking the faces of their animals. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Ḥudhayfah, “Drive on, drive on,” until he had descended the pass. When he reached the bottom, he dismounted and ʿAmmār returned.
‘The Prophet ﷺ asked, “O ʿAmmār, did you recognise the men?” He replied, “I recognised most of the mounts, but the men had their faces covered.” He asked, “Do you know what they wanted?” He answered, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “They wanted to startle the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and throw him.”
‘ʿAmmār then quietly asked one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, “I adjure you by Allah, how many were the people of the pass?” He replied, “Fourteen.” ʿAmmār said, “If you were among them, then they were fifteen.” He continued, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ excused three of them, for they said, ‘We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we did not know what the others intended.’ I bear witness that the remaining twelve are at war with Allah and His Messenger in this life and on the Day when the witnesses stand.”’
