Imām Aḥmad (1) also transmitted the report through Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. In his version he made no mention of the Expedition of Tabūk; he simply said, “It occurred during one of the campaigns he undertook.”
Account of the Messenger’s ﷺ passage, on his way to Tabūk, by the dwellings of Thamūd and their stone-hewn residences at al-Ḥijr
Ibn Isḥāq (2) states: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed through al-Ḥijr he stopped there, and the people drew water from its well. After they had moved on, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Do not drink any of its water, nor perform ablution with it. As for any dough you have prepared with that water, feed it to the camels and do not eat any of it.”
This is how Ibn Isḥāq records the incident, without citing a chain of transmission.
Imām Aḥmad (3) said: Yaʿmar ibn Bishr narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh—meaning Ibn al-Mubārak—narrated to us; Muʿammar related to us from al-Zuhrī, who said: Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh informed me, from his father, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by al-Ḥijr he declared:
“Do not enter the dwellings of those who wronged themselves unless you are weeping, lest what befell them should befall you,”
and he pulled his cloak over his face while seated on the saddle.
Al-Bukhārī (4) likewise recorded this ḥadīth through ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak and ʿAbd al-Razzāq, both from Muʿammar, with a comparable chain.
Mālik (5) reports, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his Companions:
“Do not enter upon these people who were punished unless you are weeping; if you are not weeping, then do not enter upon them, lest the same fate strike you.”
Al-Bukhārī (6) narrated this through Mālik and through Sulaymān ibn Bilāl, both from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, and Muslim (7) transmitted it as well through another route from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār.
Imām Aḥmad (8) further said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad related to us; Ṣakhr—that is, Ibn Jawayriyyah—related to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar
