He camped at al-Jiʿrānah, distributed the spoils there, and then performed ʿumrah from that place two nights before the end of Shawwāl. The report is extremely peculiar and its chain of transmission is questionable; Allah knows best.
Al-Bukhārī (1) records: “Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, saying: ʿAṭāʾ informed me that Ṣafwān ibn Yaʿlā ibn Umayyah informed him that his father Yaʿlā used to say, ‘If only I could see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when revelation descends upon him.’ He said: While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at al-Jiʿrānah, a cloth had been thrown over him for shade and a number of his Companions were with him, a Bedouin arrived wearing a cloak drenched in perfume and said:
‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your ruling concerning a man who enters iḥrām for ʿumrah wearing a cloak after having applied perfume?’
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb motioned to Yaʿlā with his hand, telling him to come. Yaʿlā came and put his head inside, and there was the Prophet ﷺ, his face reddened, breathing heavily for a while; then the state lifted from him. He said:
‘Where is the one who was asking me about ʿumrah a moment ago?’
The man was sought and brought. The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘As for the perfume on you, wash it off three times; and as for the cloak, remove it. Then perform in your ʿumrah what you perform in your ḥajj.’
Muslim (2) also relates it through Ibn Jurayj, and both of them (3) transmit it through another route from ʿAṭāʾ—each of them from Ṣafwān ibn Yaʿlā, from his father.
Imām Aḥmad (4) reports: “Abū Usāmah told us; Hishām related to us, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ‘In the year of the Conquest, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca from Kadāʾ at its upper side, and in his ʿumrah he entered from Kudā.’”
Abū Dāwūd (5) records: “Mūsā Abū Salamah told us; Ḥammād told us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khuthaym, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions performed ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah. They trotted around the House three circuits and walked four, placing their cloaks beneath their right armpits and then throwing them over their left shoulders.” This wording is unique to Abū Dāwūd.
Ibn Mājah (6) likewise transmits it through Ibn Khuthaym, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Ibn ʿAbbās in abridged form.
Imām Aḥmad (7) further relates: “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj; Ḥasan ibn Muslim narrated to me, from Ṭāwūs, that Ibn ʿAbbās informed him that Muʿāwiyah informed him, saying: ‘I clipped the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a broad-headed arrow—or, he said, I saw him having his hair clipped with a broad-headed arrow—at al-Marwah.’”
