The ʿUmrah of al-Jiʿrānah
in the month of Dhū al-Qaʿdah
Imām Aḥmad relates: Bohz and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad—conveying the same report—told us, saying: Hammām ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Qatādah, who said: I asked Anas ibn Mālik, “How many times did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform the Ḥajj?” He replied, “One Ḥajj, and he performed four ʿumrahs: his ʿumrah in the year of al-Ḥudaybiyah; the ʿumrah he undertook in Dhū al-Qaʿdah when he set out from Madinah; the ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah in Dhū al-Qaʿdah after he had distributed the booty of Ḥunayn; and the ʿumrah that accompanied his Farewell Pilgrimage.”
Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī all transmit this report through several chains from Hammām ibn Yaḥyā, and al-Tirmidhī labels it “sound and authentic.”
Imām Aḥmad also reports: Abū al-Naḍr narrated to us; Dāwūd—meaning al-ʿAṭṭār—narrated to us, from ʿAmr, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿumrahs: the ʿumrah of al-Ḥudaybiyah, the ʿumrah of al-Qaḍāʾ, the third from al-Jiʿrānah, and the fourth which he performed along with his Ḥajj.”
Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah likewise transmit it from Dāwūd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-ʿAṭṭār al-Makkī, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, and al-Tirmidhī grades it ḥasan.
Imām Aḥmad further says: Yaḥyā ibn Zakarīyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us; Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāh narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather—ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed three ʿumrahs, all of them in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, remaining in talbiyah until he touched the Black Stone.” This chain is unfamiliar from this particular route. The three ʿumrahs that occurred in Dhū al-Qaʿdah—apart from the ʿumrah performed together with his Ḥajj, which took place during the pilgrimage itself—are those already mentioned. If the narrator intended merely the time when the Prophet entered into the state of iḥrām for these rites, he may have excluded the ʿumrah of al-Ḥudaybiyah, since the Prophet was barred from completing it and therefore did not actually perform it. Allah knows best.
I add: Nāfiʿ and his master Ibn ʿUmar outright denied that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever performed an ʿumrah from al-Jiʿrānah. Al-Bukhārī states: Abū al-Nuʿmān narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar that—
