Objection Raised by Certain Ignorant Hypocrites to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Concerning a Division whose Justice was Beyond Dispute
al-Bukhārī (1) relates: Qabīṣah narrated to us; Sufyān, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“When the Prophet ﷺ apportioned the spoils of Ḥunayn, a man from the Anṣār remarked, ‘This allotment was not intended for the sake of Allah.’ I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him; his face changed, and he said,
‘May Allah have mercy on Moses. He was wronged with far worse than this, yet he remained patient.’”
Muslim (2) also transmits the report through al-Aʿmash.
al-Bukhārī (3) likewise records: Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Jarīr, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“On the day of Ḥunayn the Prophet ﷺ showed favor to certain people: he gave al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis one hundred camels, the same to ʿUyaynah, and he gave to others as well. A man exclaimed, ‘No desire for the Face of Allah lay behind this division.’ I said, ‘I shall certainly inform the Prophet ﷺ.’ He responded,
‘May Allah have mercy on Moses. He was harmed with worse than this, yet he remained patient.’”
al-Bukhārī (4) also presents it through Manṣūr ibn al-Muʿtamir with the same wording.
In another recension cited by al-Bukhārī (5):
“A man said, ‘By Allah, this is a division in which there is no justice, nor was Allah’s Face sought by it.’ I said, ‘By Allah, I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ When I told him, he said,
‘Who will do justice if Allah and His Messenger do not? May Allah have mercy on Moses. He was harmed with worse than this, yet he remained patient.’”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (6) reports: Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir related to me, from Maqsam Abū’l-Qāsim—the freedman of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal—who said:
“I went out with Talīd ibn Kilāb al-Laythī until we reached ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. He was circumambulating the House, his sandals hanging in his hand. We asked, ‘Were you present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the Tamīmī addressed him on the day of Ḥunayn?’ He replied, ‘Yes. A man from Banū Tamīm called Dhū’l-Khuwayṣirah came while the Prophet ﷺ was distributing the spoils. He stood before him and said, “O Muḥammad, I have observed what you did today.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Indeed? And what did you see?” He answered, “I did not see you act justly.” The Prophet ﷺ became angry and said, “Woe to you! If justice is not found with me, then where…’”
