“I do not remember the exact words.”
They replied, “Yes you do, O Messenger of God.”
He resumed, “And you were a people who did not ride horses.”
Each time he mentioned a blessing they answered, “Indeed, O Messenger of God.”
He then recited the rest of the sermon as already related. This wording is also reported exclusively by Imām Aḥmad.
In the same manner Imām Aḥmad (1) transmits it alone through al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Saʿīd with similar wording, and he (2) records an abridged version from Mūsā, from Ibn Luhayʿah, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir.
Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah relates—from ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd ibn Masrūq, from his father, from ʿUbāyah ibn Rifāʿah ibn Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj, from his grandfather Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj—that the Messenger of God ﷺ allotted to those whose hearts were being reconciled, from the booty of Ḥunayn, one hundred camels each. He gave Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb one hundred, Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah one hundred, ʿUyaynā ibn Ḥiṣn one hundred, al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis one hundred, ʿAlqamah ibn ʿUlāthah one hundred, and Mālik ibn ʿAwf one hundred. He granted al-ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās less than one hundred—his share fell short of theirs—so al-ʿAbbās recited:
[metre: al-mutaqārib]
Will you leave my spoil—and the spoil of my slaves—
To ʿUyaynā and to al-Aqraʿ?
No Ḥiṣn nor Ḥābis, in any assembly,
Outshines Mirdās in rank.
Nor am I inferior to either of them;
Whomever you humble today will not be raised.
In war I have always been quick to the charge,
Yet I was neither granted nor refused!
The Prophet ﷺ thereupon made his share up to one hundred.
Muslim (4) records it through Ibn ʿUyaynah in similar fashion; the wording cited here is that of al-Bayhaqī (5).
In another recension narrated by Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, and Ibn Isḥāq, he said:
They were scattered spoils that I gathered at speed,
Urging my mare across broken ground;
Rousing the clan lest they yield to sleep—
While others slept on, I never lay down.
Yet now my spoil—and the spoil of my slaves—
Lies with ʿUyaynā and al-Aqraʿ!
In war I have always been one who assaults,
Yet I was neither granted nor refused—
Save a handful of lank-haired she-camels you gave,
Nothing to them but their four legs!
