Imam Aḥmad related (1): ʿAffān narrated to us, Ḥammād narrated to us, Thābit narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik that the Messenger of God ﷺ granted gifts on the Day of Ḥunayn to Abū Sufyān, ʿUyaynah, al-Aqraʿ, Suhayl ibn ʿAmr, and others. Thereupon the Anṣār said, “O Messenger of God, our swords are still dripping with their blood, yet they are taking the booty!” When this reached the Prophet ﷺ he gathered them in his pavilion until it was filled and said:
“Is anyone among you who is not one of you?”
They replied, “No—except the son of our sister.”
He said, “The son of a people’s sister is counted among them.”
He then asked, “Did you say such-and-such?”
They answered, “Yes.”
He said, “You are the inner garment, while the rest of the people are the outer cloak. Are you not pleased that men go away with sheep and camels while you return home with the Messenger of God ﷺ?”
They said, “Indeed.”
He continued, “The Anṣār are my bosom and my confidants. If mankind were to follow a valley and the Anṣār a mountain pass, I would follow the pass of the Anṣār. Had it not been for the Emigration, I would have been a man of the Anṣār.”
Ḥammād added: He bestowed one hundred camels, naming each of these men. This report is unique to Aḥmad through this chain and meets the conditions set by Muslim.
Imam Aḥmad also said (2): Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Ḥumayd, from Anas that the Messenger of God ﷺ said:
“O company of the Anṣār! Did I not come to you while you were astray, and God guided you through me? Did I not come to you divided, and God united you through me? Did I not come to you as enemies, and God joined your hearts together?”
They replied, “Yes, O Messenger of God.”
He said, “Will you not say: ‘You came to us in fear and we gave you safety; expelled, and we sheltered you; abandoned, and we supported you’?”
They said, “Rather, the favor belongs to God and His Messenger.”
This chain is only three narrators long and satisfies the criteria of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Thus the narration is virtually mass-transmitted from Anas ibn Mālik, and it has also been reported from other Companions.
Al-Bukhārī said (3): Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Wahīb narrated to us, ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, from ʿAbbād ibn Tamīm, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd ibn ʿĀṣim, who said: When God granted His Messenger ﷺ the spoils on the Day of Ḥunayn, he distributed them among the people—those whose hearts were to be reconciled—and gave nothing to the Anṣār. They felt uneasy because they had not received what the others received. He addressed them and said:
“O company of the Anṣār! Did I not find you astray, and God guided you through me? Were you not divided, and God united you through me? Were you not impoverished, and God enriched you through me?”
Whenever he stated something they replied, “God and His Messenger bestow the greater favor.”
He then said, “If you wished you could say: ‘You came to us in such-and-such a state and we treated you in such-and-such a way.’ Are you not satisfied that people depart with sheep and camels while you return with the Messenger of God to your tents? Were it not for the Emigration, I would have been one of the Anṣār. If people were to take a valley or a mountain path, I would take the valley or path of the Anṣār. The Anṣār are the inner garment and other people the outer cloak. You will meet preferential treatment after me, so be patient until you meet me at the Ḥawḍ.”
Muslim likewise transmitted it (4) through the narration of ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā al-Māzinī.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr also reported (5) from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah told me, from Maḥmūd ibn
