Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

He continued:

The Messenger of God ﷺ then called out, “To me, O Emigrants! To me, O Emigrants! To me, O Helpers!” Anas remarked, “These are the words related by my two uncles.” We answered, “At your service, Messenger of God.” The Messenger of God ﷺ advanced, and—by God—we had not yet reached the enemy before God had already routed them. We gathered the booty, set off toward al-Ṭāʾif, besieged it for forty nights, and then returned to Mecca. Once we had encamped, the Messenger of God ﷺ began giving one man a hundred and another man a hundred.

The Ansār spoke among themselves: “He gives to those who fought him, but to those who did not fight him he gives nothing!” Their statement reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, who ordered the leading Emigrants and Helpers to come in to him. He then said, “Let no one enter upon me except an Ansārī”—or, “except the Ansār.” We entered the pavilion until it was full.

The Prophet of God ﷺ said, “O assembly of the Ansār”—or words to that effect—“what is this report that has reached me?” They replied, “What report has reached you, Messenger of God?” He repeated, “What is this report that has reached me?” They again responded, “What has reached you, Messenger of God?” He said, “Are you not pleased that people depart with wealth while you depart with the Messenger of God, taking him back to your homes?” They answered, “We are pleased, Messenger of God.” And so they were satisfied— or words to that effect.

Muslim also narrated this ḥadīth (1) through the chain of Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān. Among its unusual details are his statement that the Muslims numbered six thousand on the day of Hawāzin—whereas they were twelve thousand—and his statement that the siege of al-Ṭāʾif lasted forty nights, when in fact it lasted roughly a month or less than twenty nights. God knows best.

Al-Bukhārī (2) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad related to us; Hishām related to us; Maʿmar related to us from al-Zuhrī, who told me that Anas ibn Mālik said:

When God bestowed upon His Messenger ﷺ the wealth of Hawāzin, the Prophet ﷺ began giving certain men one hundred camels each. Some of the Ansār said, “May God forgive the Messenger of God ﷺ; he gives to Quraysh and leaves us while our swords are still dripping with their blood!”

Anas ibn Mālik continued: The Messenger of God ﷺ was informed of their words, so he summoned the Ansār, gathering them in a leather tent and allowing no one else to enter. When they had assembled, the Prophet ﷺ stood and said, “What is this report that has reached me from you?”

The learned among the Ansār replied, “Our leaders, Messenger of God, have said nothing; but some of our young men have said, ‘May God forgive the Messenger of God; he gives to Quraysh and leaves us while our swords are still dripping with their blood.’”

The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “I give to men who are newly reconciled to Islam, winning their hearts. Are you not content that people go away with livestock while you go away with the Prophet to your dwellings? By God, what you take home is better than what they take home.” They said, “Messenger of God, we are content.”

He then said to them, “You will soon face severe preferential treatment; so be patient until you meet God and His Messenger, for I shall be waiting for you at the Basin.” Anas said, “But they did not remain patient.” Al-Bukhārī alone transmitted this narration through this chain.
