• ʿAdiyy al-Anṣārī (1) of the clan of Banū al-ʿAjlān.
• Abū ʿĀmir al-Ashʿarī (2), the commander of the Autās expedition.
These, then, make four—may Allah be pleased with them.
Section: Selected poetry composed about the Hāwāzin campaign
Among it are the lines of Bujayr ibn Zuhayr ibn Abī Sulmā (3):
Were it not for God and His Servant, you would have fled
when panic seized the heart of every coward.
At al-Jizaʿ, when our peers bore down upon us,
the swift-paced mounts went headlong, falling on their chins.
Some—clutching their garments—ran for their lives;
others were trailed by pounding hooves and fore-chests.
God honored us, made manifest our religion,
and strengthened us through worship of the All-Merciful.
God destroyed them, scattered their host,
and humbled them through their worship of Satan.
Ibn Hishām comments that some transmitters add the following couplets:
When your Prophet’s uncle, his devoted ally, stood up, he called:
“O battalion of faith!
Where are those who answered their Lord
on the Day of al-ʿUrayḍ and at the Pledge of Riḍwān?”
ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās al-Sulamī (4) also recited:
By the galloping chargers on the Day of Gathering,
and by the scripture the Messenger proclaims,
I delighted in what befell Thaqīf
yesterday beside the ravine—an affliction indeed.
They are the very head of the enemy folk of Najd;
their slaughter is sweeter than the finest drink.
We routed the host, the host of Banū Qasiyy,
until camel-boards scraped against Banū Riʾāb.
