Muslim (1) transmits—through Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barrāʾ—that al-Barrāʾ said:
“When the Prophet ﷺ dismounted he called upon Allah for aid, repeating:
‘I am the Prophet—this is no falsehood!
I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib!
O Allah, send down Your help!’
Al-Barrāʾ added: “Whenever the fighting became furious we would shield ourselves behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; the truly courageous one was he who managed to stand shoulder to shoulder with him.”
Al-Bayhaqī (2) reports through several chains that on that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also declared:
“I am the son of the ʿAwātik.”
Al-Ṭabarānī (3) relates—by way of ʿAbbās ibn al-Faḍl al-Asfāṭī … from Sayyābah ibn ʿĀṣim al-Sulamī—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said at Ḥunayn:
“I am the son of the ʿAwātik.”
Al-Bukhārī (4) records: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf related to us; Mālik narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿUmar ibn Kathīr ibn Aflaḥ, from Abū Muḥammad, the client of Abū Qatādah, from Abū Qatādah, who said:
“We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Ḥunayn. When the armies met, the Muslims were routed for a moment. I saw an idolater overpowering a Muslim, so I struck him from behind, along the line of his shoulder, with my sword and split his coat of mail. He turned on me and seized me in so crushing a grip that I smelt death itself, but then death overtook him and he released me. I caught up with ʿUmar and asked, ‘What is happening to the people?’ He replied, ‘It is Allah’s decree, Exalted is He.’ Soon after, the Muslims regrouped.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sat down and proclaimed, ‘Whoever kills an enemy combatant and can produce proof of it shall have his spoils.’ I stood and asked, ‘Who will testify for me?’ then sat down. The Prophet ﷺ repeated his proclamation; again I asked, ‘Who will testify for me?’ and sat down. He repeated it a third time, and once more I asked, ‘Who will testify for me?’ After he repeated it a fourth time, I rose. He said, ‘What is the matter with you, Abū Qatādah?’ I told him what had happened.
“A man said, ‘He speaks the truth; the dead man’s spoils are with me. Compensate me for them.’ Abū Bakr exclaimed, ‘By Allah, that will never do! Would anyone strip a lion of Allah’s lions who fought for Allah and His Messenger and then hand you his spoils?’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘He has spoken the truth; give them to him.’ So the man handed them over to me, and with them I purchased a date-grove among the Banū Salamah. It was the very first property I ever owned in Islam.”
All of the remaining compilers, with the exception of al-Nasāʾī (5), narrated this report through the chain of Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd.
