In another narration it is stated that he took no pledge from the women except verbally, saying,
“My word to a single woman is the same as my word to a hundred women.” (1)
Both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (2) relate from ʿĀʾishah that Hind bint ʿUtbah, the wife of Abū Sufyān, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, Abū Sufyān is a miserly man; he does not give me enough maintenance for myself and my children. Is it sinful for me to take from his wealth without his knowledge?” He replied, “Take from his wealth, in a reasonable manner, what suffices you and your children.”
Al-Bayhaqī (3) transmits—through Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, al-Layth, Yūnus, Ibn Shihāb, ʿUrwah, and ʿĀʾishah—that Hind bint ʿUtbah said, “Messenger of Allah, there was nothing on the face of the earth—tents or the people of a tent (the uncertainty is from Ibn Bukayr)—that I wanted more to see humiliated than the people of your tent; yet today there are no people of any tent on earth whom I want more to see honored than the people of your tent.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “And so it is, by Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad.” She then asked, “Messenger of Allah, Abū Sufyān is a tight-fisted man; is there any harm if I take from what he has to feed myself?” He answered, “No—only take what is reasonable.” Al-Bukhārī (4) records a similar report from Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, and what pertains to Abū Sufyān’s acceptance of Islam has already been mentioned.
Abū Dāwūd (5) reports—ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Jarīr, from Manṣūr, from Mujāhid, from Ṭāwūs, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, “There is no [further] migration, but there remains jihad and intention; and when you are called to march forth, then go forth.” Al-Bukhārī (6) relates it through ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah, and Muslim through Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, both from Jarīr.
Imām Aḥmad (7) records—ʿAffān narrated to us; Wahīb, from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father—that Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah was told, “No one will enter Paradise except one who migrated.” He said, “I shall not enter my house until I go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him.” When he did so and mentioned the matter, the Prophet said, “There is no migration after the Conquest of Mecca, but jihad and intention; and when you are called to march forth, then go forth.” Aḥmad alone transmits this report.
Al-Bukhārī (8) also says: Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Sulaymān, from ʿĀṣim, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Mujāshiʿ ibn Masʿūd, who said: “I went with Abū Mabʿad to the Prophet ﷺ to pledge allegiance for migration, and he said—”
