Al-Bukhārī (1) goes on to relate: ʿAbdān narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿĀṣim informed us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained in Mecca for nineteen days, praying two rakʿahs.”
Al-Bukhārī transmits the report through another chain as well—adding the words, “and Ḥuṣayn, both of them”—and the same narration is found in Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah, all through ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās (2). In one wording preserved by Abū Dāwūd the number is “seventeen.”
Aḥmad ibn Yūnus (3) told us; Abū Shihāb narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said, “We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey for nineteen days, shortening the prayer.” Ibn ʿAbbās added, “So we shorten the prayer for any stay up to nineteen days; once it exceeds that, we pray in full.”
Abū Dāwūd (4) reports: Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn ʿUlayyah narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Zayd, on the authority of Abū Naḍrah, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, who said, “I campaigned with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and was present at the Conquest. He remained eighteen nights, praying no more than two rakʿahs, and he would say,
‘People of this town, pray four, for we are travelers.’”
Al-Tirmidhī (5) transmits the same report through ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān and comments, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
Abū Dāwūd (6) also relates—through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in the year of the Conquest, stayed fifteen nights, shortening the prayer.” He adds, “Several transmitters relate it from Ibn Isḥāq without mentioning Ibn ʿAbbās.”
Ibn Idrīs (7) reports—from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, and from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr, ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, and others—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in Mecca for fifteen nights.
