Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

He said:

When the Messenger of God ﷺ had opened Mecca, he dispatched Khālid ibn al-Walīd as a caller to Islam, not as a combatant. With him went contingents from the Arab tribes of Sulaym ibn Manṣūr and Mudlij ibn Murrah. They entered the territory of Banū Jadhīmah ibn ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Manāh ibn Kinānah. When the people saw him they took up their arms.

Khālid announced, “Lay down your weapons, for the people have accepted Islam.”

Ibn Isḥāq (1) relates: One of our learned companions from among Banū Jadhīmah told me that when Khālid ordered us to put down our arms, a man of ours—called Jaḥdam—said, “Woe to you, Banū Jadhīmah! It is Khālid. By God, after we lay down our weapons there will be shackles, and after the shackles come severed necks. By God, I shall never lay down my weapon.”

Men of his clan seized him and said, “Jaḥdam, do you wish to spill our blood? People have embraced Islam, the fighting is over, and everyone is safe.” They persisted with him until they took his weapon from him, and the tribe laid down their arms in obedience to Khālid.

Ibn Isḥāq (2) continues: Ḥakīm ibn Ḥakīm narrated to me from Abū Jaʿfar that when they had laid down their weapons, Khālid ordered that they be bound, then brought them forward to the sword and killed those he killed among them.

When the news reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, he raised his hands toward heaven and said,

“O Allah, I declare my innocence before You of what Khālid ibn al-Walīd has done.” (3)

Ibn Hishām says: A man slipped away from the group and came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to inform him of what had occurred.

The Messenger of God ﷺ asked, “Did anyone object to him?”

He replied, “Yes. A fair-skinned, medium-statured man rebuked him, but Khālid silenced him, so he fell quiet. Another man, tall and powerfully built, also reproached him; they disputed and their argument intensified.”

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said, “As for the first, O Messenger of God, he is my son ʿAbd Allāh; and the second is Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah.”

Ibn Isḥāq (5) relates: Ḥakīm ibn Ḥakīm told me from Abū Jaʿfar that the Messenger of God ﷺ then summoned ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and said,

“O ʿAlī, go to these people, investigate their case, and place all traces of the Age of Ignorance beneath your feet.”

ʿAlī set out and reached them with funds the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent. He paid blood-money for every life taken and compensated them for any property seized—so much so that he even paid for a dog’s water-bowl. When no blood or property remained uncompensated, some of the money was still left.

When ʿAlī had finished, he asked them, “Is there any blood or property for which you have not been compensated?”

They answered, “No.”

He said, “Then I…"
