Ibn Hishām adds: The wife of ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl—together with Fakhtah bint al-Walīd and Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith—had already embraced Islam. She followed him all the way to Yemen, brought him back, and he too accepted the faith. When both husband and wife had become Muslim, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ confirmed their marriage on the basis of the original contract.
Ibn Isḥāq relates: S aʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥassān ibn Thābit told me that Ḥassān hurled a single line of verse at Ibn al-Zibʿarī while the latter was in Najrān; he said nothing more than:
“Count not among men the one whose spite has hurled you into Najrān,
Living the pinched life of a base, contemptible cur!”
When these words reached Ibn al-Zibʿarī he went straight to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and accepted Islam, and on entering the faith he recited:
“O Messenger of the Sovereign Lord, my tongue
Now mends the rents it tore when I was lost;
I vied with Satan, treading tracks of error—
Whoever leans his way is surely doomed.
My flesh and bones believe in Him Who formed me;
My heart bears witness—you are the Warner.
Henceforth I shall restrain, on your behalf,
A living clan of Luʾayy, all deluded.”
Ibn Isḥāq also said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zibʿarī recited another poem after his conversion:
“Cares and worries have banished sleep from my eyes,
While the night, dark-vaulted, surges overhead.
News reached me that Aḥmad had reproached me;
I lay awake as though consumed with fever.
O best of men whom a swift, broad-handed, headstrong
She-camel ever bore upon her frame!
Here I stand to offer full apology
For what I did while wandering in error—
On days when Sahm, and Makhzūm as well,
Urged me to follow the most perverse of paths;
I grasped the cords of ruin, and the leaders
Of the misguided led me—evil leaders.
But now my heart believes in Prophet Muhammad;
Whoever misses this is truly deprived.
The rancor has departed, its causes ended,
And bonds of kinship and good sense revived.
So pardon me—may both my parents be
Ransomed for you—for you are Merciful, shown mercy.
Upon you rests, from the All-Knowing King, a token:
A radiant light and a sealed, distinct mark.
He granted you, after His love, His mighty proof—
An honor; and the proof of God is great.”
