Muslim likewise transmitted it through the narration of Ḥammād ibn Salamah; all three of them relate from Thābit, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rabāḥ al-Anṣārī, a resident of Basra, from Abū Hurayrah with wording to the same effect.
Ibn Hishām said: One of the scholars told me that Faḍālah ibn ʿUmayr ibn al-Mulawwaḥ—the Laythī—had resolved to kill the Prophet ﷺ while he was circling the Kaʿbah in the Year of the Conquest. When he drew near, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Is that Faḍālah?”
He replied, “Yes—Faḍālah, O Messenger of Allah.”
He asked, “What were you telling yourself?”
He answered, “Nothing; I was simply remembering Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, “Seek Allah’s forgiveness,” then placed his hand upon Faḍālah’s chest, whereupon his heart grew calm. Faḍālah later said, “By Allah, he had not lifted his hand from my chest before there was no creature of Allah more beloved to me than he.”
Faḍālah continued: I returned to my family, and on the way I passed by a woman with whom I used to converse. She said, “Come, let us talk.” I replied, “No,” and broke into verse:
“She said, ‘Come, let us speak.’ I answered, ‘Never—
May Allah and Islam forbid such endeavor!
Have you not seen Muhammad and his clan
The day idols were smashed and victory began?
You would have seen God’s religion shine bright,
While over idolatry spread a mantle of night.’”
Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah, that Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah set out for Jeddah intending to sail to Yemen. ʿUmayr ibn Wahb said, “O Prophet of Allah, Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah is the chief of his people. He has fled from you and is about to throw himself into the sea. Grant him safety, O Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless you.” He replied, “He is safe.”
ʿUmayr said, “O Messenger of Allah, give me a token by which he will know of your protection.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him the turban with which he had entered Mecca. ʿUmayr took it and caught up with Ṣafwān just as he was about to board the ship.
He said, “O Ṣafwān, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! Fear Allah concerning yourself and do not destroy it. I have brought you the guarantee of safety from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Ṣafwān said, “Away with you! Do not speak to me.”
He replied, “O Ṣafwān, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! The best, most dutiful, most forbearing, and most generous of people is your cousin; his honor is your honor, his glory your glory, and his sovereignty your sovereignty.”
Ṣafwān said, “I still fear him for my life.”
He answered, “He is far more forbearing and noble than that.” So he returned with him until they stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Ṣafwān said, “This man claims that you have granted me safety.”
He replied, “He has spoken the truth.”
Ṣafwān said, “Then give me two months to decide.”
He replied, “You have four months in which to decide.”
Ibn Isḥāq then reported on the authority of al-Zuhrī that Fakhtah bint al-Walīd, the wife of Ṣafwān, and Umm Ḥakīm bint al-Ḥārith ibn
