“Shall I not prepare some food and invite them to my quarters?”
He said: So I ordered that a meal be made, and later that evening I met Abū Hurayrah.
I said, “Abū Hurayrah, tonight the invitation is at my place.”
He replied, “You have beaten me to it?!” – Hāshim added: I said, “Yes.”
So I invited them and they gathered with me.
Abū Hurayrah then said, “Shall I not relate to you, O community of the Anṣār, one of your own reports?”
He proceeded to recount the Conquest of Mecca.
He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced and entered Mecca. He placed al-Zubayr over one of the two flanks, Khālid over the other, and Abū ʿUbaydah over the infantry, while they took the valley floor and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained with his own detachment.
Quraysh had roused its rabble. They said, “We will put these men forward; if they achieve something we shall be with them, but if they are struck down we will give what is asked of us.”
Abū Hurayrah continued: The Prophet looked, caught sight of me, and said, “O Abū Hurayrah!” I answered, “At your service, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Call the Anṣār for me, and let no one come to me except an Anṣārī.” I called them, they came, and they encircled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He said, “Do you see the riffraff of Quraysh and their followers?” Then, clasping one hand over the other, he said, “Cut them down as a reaper cuts his harvest until you meet me at al-Ṣafā.”
Abū Hurayrah said: We moved out, and each of us killed from them whatever he wished, while not one of them turned anything against us.
Abū Sufyān said, “O Messenger of Allah, the very heart of Quraysh has been laid bare—there will be no Quraysh after today.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe.” At that the people shut their doors.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came to the Black Stone, touched it, and circumambulated the House. In his hand was a bow, which he was holding by its string. During his tawāf he passed an idol set beside the Kaʿbah that they used to worship; he began stabbing it in the eye with the bow while saying, “Truth has come and falsehood has vanished.”
He then went to al-Ṣafā, ascended it where he could look upon the House, raised his hands, and engaged in remembrance of Allah and supplication as He willed. The Anṣār were below him, saying to one another, “The man has been overtaken by longing for his homeland and pity for his clan.”
Abū Hurayrah said: Then revelation came down—and whenever it came it was never hidden from us; no one would so much as raise his gaze toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until it ended.
Hāshim said: When the revelation was complete, he lifted his head and said, “O assembly of the Anṣār, did you say: ‘The man has been overtaken by longing for his homeland and compassion for his kin’?” They replied, “We did say that, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said, “What then is my name? Certainly not! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I emigrated to Allah and to you; my life is with you and my death is with you.”
They came toward him weeping, saying, “By Allah, we only said what we said out of devotion to Allah and His Messenger.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you.”
Muslim and al-Nasāʾī likewise transmitted this ḥadīth through Sulaymān ibn al-Mughīrah; al-Nasāʾī added the narration of Salām ibn Miskīn.
