Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Ibn Isḥāq reported: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥarmalah al-Aslamī related to me, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, learned of what Kharrāsh ibn Umayyah had done, he remarked, “Kharrāsh is a killer.”

Ibn Isḥāq also said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī told me, on the authority of Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzaʿī al-ʿAdawī, who said:

When ʿAmr ibn al-Zubayr came to Mecca to fight his brother ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, I went to him and said, “Sir, we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day he conquered Mecca. The morning after the Conquest, the tribe of Khuzaʿah attacked a man from Hudhayl and killed him while he was still an idolater. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then rose and addressed us:

‘People, Allah declared Mecca sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth; it remains sacred by Allah’s decree until the Day of Resurrection. No one who believes in Allah and the Last Day may shed blood therein or cut down its trees. It was never made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me; it was made lawful for me only for this single hour, in wrath against its inhabitants. Now its sanctity has returned just as it was yesterday. Let those who are present convey this to those who are absent. If someone tells you, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fought within it,” say, “Allah permitted it to His Messenger, and He has not permitted it to you.”

‘People of Khuzaʿah, stay your hands from killing—bloodshed has grown plentiful, and to what avail? You have killed a man, and I will surely pay for him. Whoever is slain after my address today, his family shall have the better of the two options: if they wish, they may exact the blood of the killer, and if they wish, they may accept the blood-money.’ ”

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then paid the blood-money for the man whom Khuzaʿah had killed.

ʿAmr said to Abū Shurayḥ, “Be off, old man. We know the sanctuary’s sanctity better than you. It does not shelter a murderer, nor one who breaks allegiance, nor one who withholds the tribute.”

Abū Shurayḥ replied, “I was present while you were absent. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us that those who are present convey it to those who are absent. I have conveyed it to you; do as you wish.”

Ibn Hishām said: I have been informed that the first person for whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, paid blood-money on the Day of the Conquest was Junaydib ibn al-Akwaʿ, whom the Banū Kaʿb had killed; the Messenger of Allah paid one hundred camels on his behalf.

Imām Aḥmad related: Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Ḥusayn, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: When Mecca was opened to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he proclaimed, “Lay down your weapons—except Khuzaʿah against Banū Bakr.” He granted them permission until he had performed the afternoon prayer, then said, “Lay down the weapons.” The following day at Muzdalifah a man of Khuzaʿah encountered a man of Banū Bakr and killed him. When this reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he stood and addressed the people—I saw him with his back resting against the Kaʿbah—and said: “The most hostile of people before Allah are those who kill within the Sanctuary, or who kill someone other than their killer, or who kill for the vendettas of the Age of Ignorance.” He then mentioned the remainder of the report; this chain of transmission is exceedingly rare.
