Yūnus ibn Bukayr and others relate—from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered Bilāl in the Year of the Conquest to give the call to prayer from the roof of the Kaʿbah in order to vex the polytheists.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (1) reports—from Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Abū Isḥāq—that after the conquest of Mecca Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb was sitting and thinking to himself, “What if I were to assemble troops against Muḥammad?” While he was turning this over in his mind, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, struck him between the shoulders and said, “In that case, Allah would disgrace you.” Abū Sufyān raised his head to find the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, standing over him and exclaimed, “Not until this very moment was I fully certain that you are a Prophet.”
Al-Bayhaqī said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ authorized me to transmit and informed us; Abū Ḥāmid Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Muqrī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf al-Sulamī narrated; Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī narrated; Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq narrated, from Abū al-Safar, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Abū Sufyān saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, walking while the people thronged behind him, treading on his heel. He said to himself, “If only I could renew the fight against this man.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came up to him, placed his hand upon his chest, and said, “Then Allah would disgrace you.” Abū Sufyān responded, “I repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness for what I have just uttered.”
Al-Bayhaqī also transmitted—through the route of Ibn Khuzaymah and others—from Abū Ḥāmid ibn al-Sharqī, from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī, who said: Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Aʿyan al-Jazarī narrated to us, saying: My father narrated, from Isḥāq ibn Rāshid, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said: On the night the people entered Mecca during the Conquest they continued throughout the night proclaiming “Allāhu akbar” and “Lā ilāha illā Allāh,” circling the House until dawn. Abū Sufyān said to Hind, “Do you think this is from Allah?” She replied, “Yes, this is from Allah.” At daybreak Abū Sufyān went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah said, “You said to Hind, ‘Do you think this is from Allah?’ and she answered, ‘Yes, this is from Allah.’ ” Abū Sufyān declared, “I bear witness that you are the servant of Allah and His Messenger. By Him in whose name oaths are sworn, no one heard those words of mine except Hind.”
Al-Bukhārī (2) recorded: Isḥāq related to us, Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ḥasan ibn Muslim informed me, from Mujāhid, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Indeed Allah declared Mecca inviolable on the day He created the heavens and the earth. It is sacred by Allah’s sanctity until the Day of Resurrection. It was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me; it was made lawful for me only for one brief hour of the day. Its game may not be frightened away, its thorn bushes may not be cut, its vegetation may not be uprooted, and its lost property may not be picked up except by one who will announce it.”
Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, “Except for izkhir, O Messenger of Allah, for we need it for our smithies and our homes.” He remained silent, then said, “Except for izkhir—it is permitted.”
