Al-Bukhārī (1) relates: Ishāq ibn Manṣūr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Ayyūb narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, arrived in Mecca he refused to enter the House while any idols were still inside. He therefore ordered that they be removed. Among those taken out were images of Abraham and Ishmael, peace be upon them, and in their hands were divining arrows. He said,
“May Allah strike them down! They surely knew that those two never sought omens with such arrows.”
He then entered the House, pronounced the takbīr in its corners, and departed without performing prayer there. Al-Bukhārī alone records this report; Muslim does not.
Imām Aḥmad (2) reports: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Hammām narrated to us; ʿAṭāʾ narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered the Kaʿbah while six columns stood within it. He went to each column, supplicated beside it, and did not pray inside. Muslim likewise transmits it through Shaybān ibn Farrūkh, from Hammām ibn Yahyā al-ʿAwḍī, from ʿAṭāʾ.
Imām Aḥmad (3) also records: Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me that Bukayr related to him from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered the House he found an image of Abraham and an image of Mary. He said,
“They have heard that the angels do not enter a house containing images; yet here is Abraham depicted—why is he shown casting lots?”
Al-Bukhārī and al-Nasāʾī (4) also transmit this through Ibn Wahb.
Imām Aḥmad (5) reports: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Muʿammar informed us; ʿUthmān al-Jazarī informed me that he heard Miqsam narrate from Ibn ʿAbbās: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entered the House, supplicated in its corners, then came out and prayed two rakʿahs. Aḥmad alone records this.
Imām Aḥmad (6) further states: Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Layth informed us, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed two rakʿahs inside the House.
Al-Bukhārī (7) adds: Layth narrated to us; Yūnus informed us, from Nāfiʿ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that on the day of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, approached Mecca from its upper side on his mount, with Usāmah ibn Zayd riding behind him, [Bilāl accompanying him] and ʿUthmān ibn Ṭalḥah—one of the custodians of the Kaʿbah—alongside. He dismounted in the Mosque and ordered that the key of the Kaʿbah be brought. He then entered, accompanied by Usāmah ibn Zayd, Bilāl, and ʿUthmān ibn Ṭalḥah. He remained inside for a long part of the day; when he emerged, the people surged forward, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar was the first
