Umm Hānīʾ said:
He replied, “Welcome, Umm Hānīʾ!”
She went on: “O Messenger of Allah, my brother, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, claims he is going to kill two men to whom I have granted protection.”
He answered, “We have granted safety to anyone you have granted safety, Umm Hānīʾ.”
She added: “He then prayed eight rakʿahs during the mid-morning. Many scholars therefore concluded that this was the Ḍuḥā prayer, whereas others held that it was the Prayer of the Conquest. The reports clearly state that he offered salām after every two rakʿahs, which refutes al-Suhaylī(1) and others who contend that the Prayer of the Conquest consists of eight rakʿahs concluded with a single salutation. Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, moreover, when al-Madāʾin was conquered, prayed eight rakʿahs in the throne hall of Chosroes, giving salām after every two—praise be to Allah.
Ibn Isḥāq(2) relates: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr told me, on the authority of ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Thawr, from Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca and the people felt secure, he went out to the Sacred House. He circumambulated it seven times, mounted on his camel, touching the Black Stone with the staff in his hand. When he had completed his ṭawāf, he summoned ʿUthmān ibn Ṭalḥah and took from him the key of the Kaʿbah. It was opened for him, and when he entered he found within it a wooden dove. He broke it with his own hand and cast it aside, then stood at the doorway of the Kaʿbah while the people thronged the mosque below him.
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah(3) adds: After that he prostrated twice, then went to Zamzam, peered into it, called for water, drank from it and performed ablution, while the people rushed to collect the drops from his ablution. The idolaters were astonished, saying, “We have never seen or heard of a king like this.” He also moved the Station of Abraham to its present position—it had previously been attached to the House.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq(4) further said: Some men of knowledge told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood at the door of the Kaʿbah and proclaimed:
“There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and single-handedly routed the confederates. Truly, every claim of privilege, blood, or property from the Age of Ignorance is placed beneath these two feet of mine—except the custodianship of the House and the provision of water to the pilgrims. As for a person killed by an act resembling deliberate murder, with a whip or a stick, the blood-money is severe: one hundred camels, forty of them pregnant. O people of Quraysh! Allah has removed from you the arrogance of the pre-Islamic era and its pride in lineage. All people descend from Adam, and Adam was created from dust.”
He then recited the entire verse, “O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female…” (al-Ḥujurāt 13).
After this he said, “O people of Quraysh! What do you think I am going to do with you?”
They answered, “Good—you are a noble brother and the son of a noble brother.”
He declared, “Go, for you are free.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sat in the mosque, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib rose and came to him with the key of the Kaʿbah in his hand.
