Some have maintained that Ibn Khatal was killed by al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām (may Allah be pleased with him).
Ibn Isḥāq (1) relates: Saʿīd ibn Abī Hind told me—on the authority of Abū Murrah, the client of ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib—that Umm Hānīʾ bint Abī Ṭālib said:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at the upper quarter of Mecca, two men from among my in-laws of Banū Makhzūm took refuge with me.”
Ibn Hishām (2) comments: They were al-Hārith ibn Hishām and Zuhayr ibn Abī Umayyah ibn al-Mughīrah.
Ibn Isḥāq (3) continues: She was then the wife of Hubayrah ibn Abī Wahb al-Makhzūmī. She said:
“My brother ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib entered and swore, ‘By Allah, I will certainly kill them.’ I therefore locked them inside my house and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was in the upper part of Mecca. I found him bathing from a basin (4) that still bore traces of dough, while his daughter Fāṭimah was screening him with a cloth. When he finished, he took the cloth, wrapped it around himself, prayed eight rakʿahs of the forenoon (Ḍuḥā) prayer, and then turned to me and said:
‘Welcome, Umm Hānīʾ! What has brought you here?’
“I told him about the two men and about ʿAlī, whereupon he said:
‘We grant safety to whom you have granted safety and give security to whom you have granted security. He must not kill them.’ ”
Al-Bukhārī (5) records: Abū al-Walīd narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Ibn Abī Laylā, who said: “No one has informed us that he saw the Prophet ﷺ perform the Ḍuḥā prayer except Umm Hānīʾ. She stated that on the day Mecca was conquered he bathed in her house and then prayed eight rakʿahs. She added: ‘I never saw him pray more lightly, yet he completed the bowing and prostrations.’ ”
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (6) it is related—through al-Layth, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hind—that Abū Murrah, the client of ʿAqīl, narrated: Umm Hānīʾ bint Abī Ṭālib told him that in the year of the Conquest two men from Banū Makhzūm fled to her and she granted them protection. She said: “ʿAlī entered and said, ‘I will kill them.’ When I heard this I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was in the upper part of Mecca. When he saw me he welcomed me and said, ‘What has brought you?’ I replied, ‘O Prophet of Allah, I had guaranteed safety to two of my in-laws, but ʿAlī wants to kill them.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘We have granted protection to whom you have granted protection, Umm Hānīʾ.’ ”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then rose to take his bath; Fāṭimah screened him, after which he wrapped himself in a garment and prayed eight rakʿahs—the voluntary Ḍuḥā prayer.
In another version (7): She entered while he was bathing and his daughter Fāṭimah was shielding him with a cloth. He asked, “Who is that?” She replied:
