“May I be bereft of my daughter if you do not behold them—
Raising clouds of dust upon the shoulders of Kadā; (1)
Saddled, they tug at the reins in eagerness,
While the women strike them with their veils.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said,
“Enter it from the direction Ḥassān has named.”
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq (2) relates: Yahyā ibn ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr told me, from his father, from his grandmother Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted at Dhū Tuwa, Abū Quḥāfah said to a young daughter of his, “My child, take me up to Abū Qubays.” She adds that he was blind. “So I led him up, and he asked, ‘My child, what do you see?’ I replied, ‘I see a dense black mass.’ He said, ‘That is the cavalry.’ I said, ‘I also see a man running before the dark mass, moving back and forth.’ He said, ‘My child, that is the marshal—the one who commands the cavalry and rides ahead of them.’
“Then I said, ‘By God, the black mass has spread out.’ He said, ‘By God, the cavalry has now advanced; hurry me to my house.’ I brought him down, but the cavalry reached him before he arrived home.
“Around the maid-servant’s neck was a silver collar; a man met her and cut it from her neck.
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca and then the Mosque, Abū Bakr brought his father, leading him by the hand. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him he said,
‘Why did you not leave the old man in his house so that I might have come to him there?’
“Abū Bakr replied, ‘Messenger of Allah, he is more entitled to walk to you than you to him.’
“She continues: He sat him down before him, passed his hand over his chest, and said, ‘Accept Islam.’ So he embraced Islam.
“She adds: Abū Bakr brought him inside, and his head was white like the blossom of the al-thaghāmah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Change this color in his hair.’
“Abū Bakr then stood up, took his sister’s hand, and said, ‘I appeal to Allah and to Islam—return my sister’s necklace!’ No one answered him. He said, ‘Sister, reckon your necklace as gone; by Allah, trustworthiness among people today is scarce indeed.’ He meant on that particular day, because the army was large, people were scattered, and hardly anyone heeded another; the one who took it may have assumed it was spoils from an enemy. Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (3) said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Baḥr ibn Naṣr narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; he informed me from Ibn Jurayj, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb took the hand of Abū Quḥāfah and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. When he stood him before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Prophet said,
‘Change it, but do not make it black.’
[Ibn Wahb added:] ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad told me, from Zayd ibn Aslam, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ congratulated Abū Bakr on his father’s acceptance of Islam.
