Abū Dāwūd said (1): “ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Ibn Idrīs narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: In the year of the Conquest al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib brought Abū Sufyān ibn Ḥarb to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he accepted Islam at Marr al-Ẓahrān. Al-ʿAbbās then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Abū Sufyān is a man who cherishes worldly honour; would you grant him something?’ He ﷺ replied,
‘Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe, and whoever closes his own door upon himself is safe.’
Description of the Prophet’s ﷺ Entry into Mecca
It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (2), in the narration of Mālik, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca with a helmet on his head. When he removed it, a man came and said, ‘Ibn Khaṭal (3) is clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah.’ He ﷺ said,
‘Kill him.’
Mālik commented: ‘In our view—and Allah knows best—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not in a state of iḥrām.’
Aḥmad (4) reported: ʿAffān narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us; Abū al-Zubayr related from Jābir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca on the Day of the Conquest wearing a black turban.
The four compilers of the Sunan (5) also transmitted this ḥadīth through the chain of Ḥammād ibn Salamah, and al-Tirmidhī said, ‘It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.’
Muslim (6) likewise recorded—from Qutaybah and Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, from Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmmār al-Duhanī, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca wearing a black turban, not in a state of iḥrām (7).
Muslim (8) also transmitted—through the narration of Abū Usāmah, from Masāwir al-Warrāq, from Jaʿfar ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth, from his father—
