The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the Year of the Conquest while fasting and did not break his fast until he reached Kurāʿ al-Ghamīm. The people accompanying him were both on foot and mounted, and this was in the month of Ramadan. It was said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, the fast has become hard on the people, and they are waiting to see what you will do.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called for a cup of water, raised it so that all could see, and drank, while the people looked on. Some of them broke the fast and others continued to fast, until news reached the Prophet ﷺ that a number of them were still fasting. He said, “Those are the disobedient.” Muslim has recorded this ḥadīth (1) through al-Thaqafī and al-Darāwardī, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad.
Imām Aḥmad also relates (2)—on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said, “Bishīr ibn Yasār narrated to me, from Ibn ʿAbbās”—that Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed in the Year of the Conquest during Ramadan. He fasted, and the Muslims fasted with him, until he reached al-Kadīd. There he called for water in a wooden vessel while mounted on his camel, drank as the people looked on—letting them know that he had broken his fast—and so the Muslims broke theirs. Aḥmad alone transmits this report.

They met him on the road as he was heading toward the Conquest of Mecca.
Ibn Isḥāq (3) said: Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib encountered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along the way. Ibn Hishām adds that he met him at al-Juhfah, having emigrated with his family. Before that he had remained in Mecca to oversee the watering of the pilgrims, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased with him, as related by al-Zuhrī.
Ibn Isḥāq (4) further states: Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Umayyah likewise met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Naqīʿ al-ʿUqāb, between Mecca and Madinah (5). They sought permission to enter upon him, and Umm Salamah spoke on their behalf
