upon Allah to admit him to Paradise; and if his mount throws him and breaks his neck, it is likewise incumbent upon Allah to admit him to Paradise. (1)
Imām Aḥmad also said: Wakiʿ narrated to us; ʿUbādah ibn Muslim al-Fazārī narrated to us; Jubayr ibn Abī Sulaymān ibn Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim narrated to me; he said: I heard ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar say:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never left off these supplications when he entered the morning and when he entered the evening:
‘O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family and my wealth. O Allah, veil my shortcomings and calm my fears. O Allah, guard me from in front of me, from behind me, on my right, on my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge, in Your majesty, from being taken unawares from beneath me.’” (2)
Wakiʿ commented, “That means: swallowed by the earth.”
The hadith was also recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Mājah, Ibn Ḥibbān, and al-Ḥākim (3) through the narration of ʿUbādah ibn Muslim. Al-Ḥākim said, “Its chain is authentic.”
Chapter: Reports Concerning the Creation of Adam عليه السلام
Allah the Exalted said:
“[Remember] when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I am going to place upon the earth a vicegerent.’ They said, ‘Will You place upon it one who spreads corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?’ He said, ‘Indeed, I know that which you do not know.’ (30)
And He taught Adam the names—all of them. Then He presented them to the angels and said, ‘Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.’ (31)
They said, ‘Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.’ (32)
He said, ‘O Adam, inform them of their names.’ And when he had informed them of their names He said, ‘Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you reveal and what you conceal?’ (33)
And [remember] when We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate yourselves to Adam,’ and they prostrated—all but Iblīs. He refused, grew arrogant, and became one of the disbelievers. (34)
And We said, ‘O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden, and eat therefrom freely wherever you wish; but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.’ (35)
Then Satan caused them to slip from it and expelled them from what they had been in. And We said, ‘Descend, some of you an enemy to others; and for you on the earth is a dwelling-place and provision for a time.’ (36)
Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He turned to him in repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. (37)
We said, ‘Descend from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, then whoever follows My guidance—no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve. (38)
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs—those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein forever.’” (al-Baqarah 2:30–39)
He, the Exalted, also said:
“Indeed, the likeness of Jesus in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:59)
