Al-Akhzar ibn Luʿṭ al-Duʾilī composed on that occasion (1):
Has news reached the farthest quarters of the Aḥābīsh that we drove back Banū Kaʿb with blunted shafts?
We penned them inside the enclosure of the slave Rāfiʿ, and at Budayl’s house their confinement was anything but brief.
In the dwelling of the humbled one who had swallowed disgrace, we healed our spirits of them with biting blades.
We held them fast until, when their day grew long, from every mountain pass we loosed upon them a pelting torrent.
We slaughtered them as billy goats are slain—lions competing with cleaving swords!
They wronged us and overstepped in their march; by the standing stones they were the first to shed blood.
In al-Jizʿ, as we drove them on, they were like a bull’s hind-quarters with startled ostriches scattering in flight.
Budayl ibn ʿAbd Manāt ibn Salamah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Ajab—known as Budayl ibn Umm Aṣram—replied:
A people boast of a pact they have struck, though we have left them no chieftain to rally them save a mere remnant.
Is it from fear of the folk you despise that you cross al-Watīr trembling, with no thought of return?
Day after day we secure our full share of blood-money, and never is largesse granted us behind fortress walls.
At dawn we raided your quarters at al-Talāʿah with swords whose flash outstripped the blame of reproachers.
We barred the way, between glittering spears and laden camels, as far as Khayf Raḍwā from the hurtling javelins.
And on the day of al-Ghamīm a grim-faced courier was struck down—we felled him with a sturdy hide.
Shall the mother of one of you burn incense in her house, and you leap about if we do not fight?
By the House of Allah, you lie! You killed no one; we have merely left your affair in confusion.
Ibn Isḥāq (2) said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Salamah told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “It is as though Abū Sufyān is coming to you to tighten the treaty and extend its term.”
Ibn Isḥāq (3) continued: Budayl ibn Warqāʾ then set out with a band of Khuzaʿah, reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and informed him of what had befallen them and of Quraysh’s support for Banū Bakr against them. They then turned back, and on their return met Abū Sufyān at ʿUsfān; Quraysh had sent him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to reinforce the pact and prolong the truce, alarmed at what they had done. When Abū Sufyān encountered Budayl he asked, “From where have you come, Budayl?”—thinking he had gone to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Budayl replied, “I travelled through…"
