He also steeled his own resolve, refusing to dismount until the two commanders before him had been slain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ testified to his martyrdom, and thus we are certain that he is among those destined for Paradise.
It is related that, when he recited the following lines to the Prophet ﷺ as he bade him farewell:
“May Allah make firm the goodness He has granted you—
with the firmness He granted to Moses, and a victory like the one they received,”
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “And may Allah make you firm as well.” Hishām ibn ʿUrwah commented, “Allah did indeed make him firm until he was killed as a martyr and entered the Garden.”
Ḥammād ibn Zayd, transmitting from Thābit, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, relates that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah once came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon and heard him say, “Sit down.” He immediately sat where he was—outside the mosque—until the Prophet had finished. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, he said, “May Allah increase you in eagerness to obey Allah and His Messenger.”
Al-Bukhārī records in his Ṣaḥīḥ that Muʿādh said, “Come, let us sit and renew faith for a while.”
A marfūʿ report with similar wording is also transmitted from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah. Imām Aḥmad relates: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad told us, from ʿImārah, from Ziyād al-Numayrī, from Anas, who said: Whenever ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah met one of his companions he would say, “Come, let us believe in our Lord for an hour.” One day he said this to a man who became upset and went to the Prophet, complaining, “O Messenger of Allah, do you not see that Ibn Rawāḥah prefers faith for only an hour to the faith you have taught?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “May Allah have mercy on Ibn Rawāḥah; he loves gatherings at which the angels boast.” This ḥadīth is extremely rare (gharīb).
Al-Bayhaqī reports—through al-Ḥākim, Abū Bakr, Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb, Aḥmad ibn Yūnus, a shaykh of Medina, Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, and ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār—that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah once said to a companion, “Come, let us believe for an hour.” The man replied, “Are we not already believers?” He answered, “Of course we are, but we remember Allah and thereby our faith increases.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim al-Lālikāʾī likewise narrates—through Abū al-Yamān, Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, and Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd—that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah would take a companion by the hand and say, “Come, let us believe for an hour,” whereupon they would sit in a gathering of remembrance. Both of these chains are mursal, and we have discussed them in detail at the beginning of our commentary on al-Bukhārī. All praise and bounty belong to Allah.
