Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah likewise transmit this ḥadīth (1) through the chain of Mālik, and al-Tirmidhī comments: “A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ report.”
Al-Bukhārī (2) relates—Abū al-Yamān told us; Shuʿayb informed us; from Abū al-Zinād; from al-Aʿraj; from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Every child of Adam is jabbed by Satan with his finger in the side at the moment of birth. The only exception is Jesus, son of Mary: Satan advanced to jab him but struck the veil instead.”
Al-Bukhārī is unique in reporting this wording through this particular route.
Al-Bukhārī (3) also narrates—ʿĀṣim ibn ʿAlī related to us; Ibn Abī Dhīʾb related; from Saʿīd al-Maqburī; from his father; from Abū Hurayrah—that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Yawning is from Satan, so when one of you feels the urge to yawn, let him restrain it as best he can; for when any of you says, ‘Ah,’ Satan laughs at him.”
This was likewise transmitted by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī—who declared it authentic—and by al-Nasāʾī (4) through the narration of Ibn Abī Dhīʾb. In another wording it reads:
“When one of you yawns, let him stifle it as much as possible, for Satan enters.”
Imām Aḥmad (5) relates—ʿAbd al-Razzāq told us; Sufyān narrated; from Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān; from Saʿīd al-Maqburī; from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah loves sneezing and dislikes—indeed detests—yawning. So when one of you says, ‘Ha, ha,’ Satan laughs from inside him.”
Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī (6) transmit the same through Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān.
Al-Bukhārī (7) records—al-Ḥasan ibn al-Rabīʿ related to us; Abū al-Aḥwaṣ related; from Ashʿath; from his father; from Masrūq—who said: ʿĀʾishah asked the Prophet ﷺ about a man’s turning his head during the prayer, and he replied:
“It is a snatch that Satan steals from a person’s prayer.”
Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī (8) likewise narrate it through the chain of Ashʿath ibn Abī al-Shaʿthāʾ—Salīm ibn Aswad al-Mahāribī—from his father, from Masrūq.
